TSA x-ray guy at O'Hare looks at image, discretely asks if I am carrying coins and waves me through. Good job.

Had three black circles appear on the X-ray when I went though Vegas a couple weeks ago. Bags searched. Out comes the gold. The TSA agent laughed and put them back. I wanted to ask “what you laughing at? 🤑”

Not in the US, but in Schiphol airport in Amsterdam I had gold bars in my bag, idiot security couldn't just look at them, they had to take them out and hold them up for the whole crowd to see.

I ALWAYS ask for private screening for many of the reasons mentioned here.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

One out odfevery 10 times I fly I get the "treatment". I have NO issues with it and am glad they are doing it.

ICTA is working with TSA to train staff to recognize that people transport coins in their carry-on. I attribute your experience with this extra training. But in general I always ask for a private screening - it usually just takes a couple more minutes and the staff have always been nice and professional, often striking a small conversation about coins in general.

The only issue I have had with coins at the TSA screening, is when too much change accumulates in my carry-on....then they ask me to remove it so the x-ray can see if it was concealing anything... I try not to let that happen anymore... just so convenient to throw my change in there when going through screening...then forget it. And when traveling a lot, it builds up fast. Cheers, RickO

I always carry a business card that has written on the back my request for a private screening. That way, if they ask "What's this?", I just pull out the card without ever having to say a word in public.
