Pretty good strike, problem not immediately obvious. Is it cleaned?

    Cleaning marks above the crown/hair?

Edited to add: Cleaned or not, that thing is hammered.

Beautiful strike, very few contact marks except on rays obv. Too bad it's cleaned? I can't determine any varieties from photo's so I'd say strike & technical grade was why? Nice example.

Got it because of the strike. Seems the problem free ones never get quite that hammered. There seems to be more of really well struck ones in AU or cleaned. This one was determined cleaned. And no its not from APMEx lol. The pic does sort of look like theirs.

I can see if a coin has provable hairlines resulting in problem appearance and eye appeal; but they could just net it down to a 60/61. ICG makes that pragmatic decision often when coins are not really impaired.

Seems like the eagle is pretty much always well struck up on these, but the hair...not so much. I'm thinking you went for this one because it barely looks to have been cleaned and the nice hair detail.

Very true, certain accessories may be bad for collecting. Especially if it ends up in a half yours/mine event. At this day in age that is a flip of a coin. Choice is easy.

I think people focus too much on the central hair being the only weakness. While true most weak strikes will display weakness here, I think there are other areas of weakness that are often overlooked. While this one does still show some weakness at the highest points of that central hair area, it shines in strike overall, both there and in the rest of the hair and mottos. The numbers look a little soft. But for me this one had strong strike characteristics in places not often well struck that are not given credit for as much as the central hair is. Not a "special" coin by any means, but a nice strike and another good excuse to add a 21.

Nice detail on the hair, so this may be one of that approx. 210,000 examples struck on Dec 28/29 of 1921. (Isn't it nice to be able to pin down the date of creation of something you own so precisely?) Slightly paraphrasing from RWB's " A Guide Book of Peace Dollars," p. 180, he says that there are an unusual number of well struck pieces in AU condition, that in addition to being well (but not fully) struck show smooth fields and suppressed luster consistent with early strikes from new dies. Many of them may have picked up light wear after being carried for a while as pocket pieces (novelties at the time, perhaps). I think I have one of those:
