1903 V nickel yellow toning

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 8,671 ✭✭✭✭✭

Dug this AG 1903 V nickel out of nice loamy soil, 4" down. Cleaned off with distilled water and an acetone dip. Coin has an overall yellowish tone on obv and rev. Both images are an accurate color representation in hand. Your thoughts on this yellowish hue. I have dozens of other V nickels, all exhibit the usual nickel silver or shiny grey color except this one. I am not excited just curious. Peace Roy

It looks as if it was gold plated.... That was done on the 'no cents' nickels and passed as five dollar gold pieces (Henning nickels - and other copy cats)...This nickel has the 'cents' word on it, but someone plated it anyway. Cheers, RickO

Okay, I can see that the color could be the remains of a gold wash. It was just weird enough to post. Peace Roy
