Roosevelt dimes are a deceptively difficult collection

For some reason, I am attracted to Roosevelts (1946-1964). But I do not know much about them. I do know that I like, at the very least MS 66 and above FB grades. And I think PCGS and NGC have different ideas on what FB is. (I.e., FT is accounted for in NGC grading, but not so in PCGS grading). Am I wrong? I literally don't know. I'm on an ocean here. In my past collecting, I went for circulations, but now, I am looking only for MS grades. I am not knowledgeable enough about it yet. I need a book or two. I watch the PCGS videos on youtube. Any advice about Roosevelts? (And I know, they are lame to a lot of people, but I kind of like them. I want to get into the varieties. I purchased a 1963 PR67CAM DDR FS. But it has a small spot on the obverse, on the cheek, that bothers me. And I know not to buy the slab. Buy the coin. But I couldn't resist.

I like to collect coins. The history intigues me. I wonder, as I hold an 1858 penny, who held it and what they did with it.

  • I really want to get better at grading the coins myself and not relying on grading services. Any suggestions on what kind of equipment I need to do so?

Look at the bands on some proofs. That will give a good indication of what well struck bands look like.

    what about the torch?

It sounds like you have a passion for Roosies. I have never heard anyone call them lame. You are on the right track seeking the book before the coin.

There are plenty of Roosevelt experts here to help you.

    Good luck!

It can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be. You can buy raw or buy slabbed, (a lot will depend on your means and patience). There is a book or two out there, one is The Authorative refference on Roosevelt Dimes by Kevin Flynn. There may be a more recent one out there. It's a fun, less expensive way to learn about luster, strike, natural toning, etc.

Like any coin series, look at tons and tons of them in the grade you like and get a feel for them.

If you really want to get deep onto it, subscribe to PCGS to have access to population reports, direct submission privileges.

I collect them and even started a registry set, just for fun.

The bands on the torch and the torch as well. Harder for me to find fb Roosies than fb Mercs on MS coins.

  • Honestly, my problem is that I have a budget for coins. But I have no budget for camera equipment or other, what might be called, 'incidental' things, that would make the experience much better. I'm just more enamoured by the coins than the equipment needed to show them or sell them. Sorry, that has nothing to do with Roosevelts. I just tried to take a picture with my phone and it was terrible.

Only books (and the internet) and looking at many coins will help you to learn grading.... so set aside some of your coin budget for publications. Meanwhile, use this site (https://www.pcgs.com/) and the many resources it provides to help on your journey. Cheers, RickO
