Help me decide how to proceed

Our forefathers found great fun in defacing the coins in their possession. Today however even with the scars of the past some are quite rare and valuable to someone. This coin is in a 3rd world slab currently.

Here's the question, how would PCGS grade this vs NGC and which adjective just sounds the harshest to you, Graffiti, damaged or scratched?

I can only guess but I'd say graffiti because it appears intentional. Nice piece!

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

61 S Quarter.................Ouch, however they may have just wanted to test their knife they just sharpened or check for authenticity of the coin itself...............who knows, show it to ten people and you'll get 10 different story's, maybe a Shanghai'd sailor wanted proof it was his  Great piece & acceptable in a historic way, although it does lower the value....................I think it has character

Scratched but possibly, in this instance, graffiti

Hopefully "scratched" as that sounds better than 'grafitti' which is done accidentally on purpose. Anacs and Icg usually do two negatives if they see two.

Why waste money having it slabbed by another service. If you don't like the holder it is in crack it out and sell it raw. There is probably an album based collector out there who would love to be able to pick up an 1861-S quarter in original but scratched condition for a reasonable price. The scratches aren't going to go away but someone will still like having the 1861-S hole filled in their album.

    All glory is fleeting.

    Bummer....

I've actually seen a few coins in PCGS non-problem holders that had similar damage.

    Which holder is it in?

The holder is a National Numismatic Certification third world holder.

I consider that 'damaged'..... I do not think of the terms in degrees of 'harshness', but rather how accurately the term describes the issue.... i.e. graffiti would describe actual initials scratched into a coin (JMO)....Cheers, RickO

Tortured, no coin should be so abused like the mangy mutt who did that to it.
