Is this thing goofed up? Weird looking to me. Almost Proof Like with just a couple hairlines. Light Tone on surface. Cartwheel is not like you see on most mercs.

Reverse looks fine with just the light tone. Cartwheel looks like most other mercs.

Looks like a choice AU coin. Rotating it in the light is what everyone should learn to do. Now, take the coin out of the 2X2 and put something under one edge so the coin is tipped up and the light hits it at an angle. Do that in several positions and we'll be able to see more in case it is hairlined from cleaning.
No hairlineing from cleaning. That's the first thing I look for on these raw coins.

Looks like an AU58 by current standards.
16's always have a different texture and this coin also looks to have a lot of original crust on the obverse.
Nice looking coin to me. Hard to tell grade from pic.
Do you mean the vertical scraping behind Liberty --- or the high-point abrasion typical of an AU coin --- or the fellow with the funny hair peeking out from behind the fasces?
All of my raw Mercs should be so goofed up. I like it.
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Nice; but if it were struck so well like a proof, shouldn't it be FSB?
Not even close. The bands appear to be "bridged" in two places.
It seems to be a late die state coin with flow lines AND either a rework or cleaning to add to the mix. Note the neat die crack below and to the left of the date.
At least that's what I see.
Sometimes I'm not all I'm "cracked up" to be, though.

Looks like a contender for a 58+ to me
My AU58 has alot the same look.

I think it’s a gorgeous piece. I find it very original and appealing.
That is a very nice Merc... 58 I would say... Cheers, RickO
