trip to the bank

went to my local bank yesterday and asked if they had any half dollar rolls.Teller passed me 8 rolls, which I quickly checked.....no winners.Returned the rolls to the same teller and the man asked me...You looking for silver?...to which I said yes.The teller said the man that turned in the halfs was a silver geek too....then the teller informed me the other gent had turned in $500 worth of halfs.I didnt ask to see any more of the rolls but am wondering who the mystery silver collector is.This is a small town, thought I knew all the collectors.....made for an interesting trip....Chumley

I have learned to ask the tellers for customer rolls as opposed to bank rolls... sure, they may have been searched, but bank rolls have never produced silver for me....Cheers, RickO
“Silver geek”. I like that.

Newer credit union members inquire about half rolls sometimes, but most of the others that know me are aware of my coin interests. They don't even bother to ask anymore!
the local bank here knows that im a coin nut as well. one of tellers had told me theres a few more that come in and ask for the half rolls as well. the good thing is they try to split it up equally
I went to my local bank on Friday and the gentleman in line right in front of me was depositing 2 boxes of pennies and picking up two more. He commented to the teller about looking for Wheaties. He also asked if she had anything old, and she had an older $100 bill which he purchased. That's the first time I think I've seen someone else looking for goodies.
I'm actually surprised you can still find any silver in coins from the bank these days. Maybe a few wheaties from penny rolls but that seems like a lot of work for almost no value.
I've found a couple 40% half dollars in rolls the last few months.

I used to check for halves quite often around 2010-2013. Lately I haven't found any silver!

I've never searched a box of half dollars. I'd like to but I think the potential return (silver) is pretty slim or even nonexistent these days. I still think that generally speaking, loose halfs in the teller's tray are a better source of silver (I HAVE gotten them there a few times).
Plus, the places to dump the rejects have been greatly reduced in my area as on credit union will no longer accept them in the coin machine and they won't take rolls at the teller window.
I did recently discover, however that the self-checkout registers at the supermarket and Walmart both take half dollars.
That would be worth watching! Some dude plugging the self checkout at Walmart with $500 in half dollars!
I boycott Wal-Mart which leaves me to all the other stores, non of which will take halves in the self checkout machines. Only a couple of my credit unions take them in their coin machines and one of my credit unions doesn't but that is where I get all the coin machine rejects that cross the counter, Franks, Walkers, 90% and 40%.
The tellers around my house at the local PNC are clueless. I always ask when I'm there if they have any Morgans or half dollar rolls to which they reply 'what's a Morgan' or show me some Ike's. Then I really throw them asking for some Jefferson bills.

Hypothesis: I'd guess you can tell if the rolls will be fruitful based on how they are wrapped.
Old wrapper - potential bonanza.
Newer wrapper - waste of time.
I stopped looking at half rolls a dozen years ago. Would appreciate feedback from more recent experiences.

PNC is generally clueless from a customer perspective. I am actively moving my line of credit because of their uncompetitive rates. When asked for a competitive rate, they wanted more business, I declined as their overall package was weak when compared to their competitors.
Tellers are only the front line and don't know much about the other products the bank offers. And the lowest paid employees. But they are what most customers interact with.

Remember that bank tellers are not your enemy - they are people. I buy mine cookies, candy, hockey tickets etc to insure I get the goodies when they come in. Some stuff, like the three $1000 bills, the 2 $500 bills, the ASE's the 100 $5 bills from the 1920s and 1930s etc make it all worth buying treats.
I am very nice to them. It's just funny having conversations with someone who handles coins and currency constantly and yet knows no history. I guess it's just a job and not a passion.
Thanks for the reminder. I'm going to make some cookies and drop them off in the morning. They're friendly enough.
What annoys me is the calls I get once every six months or so asking if there is any other service the bank can provide since they are pushing their product and name. I have a checking, savings and IRA. What more do they want? I know - mortgage refinance or business loan - which neither apply to me.
this is the best way I have found to get full value on searched rolls. Yeah, you might look a little weird paying for food with change, but it beats taking a 9%haircut or whatever the going rate is
