Oh...Decisions Decisions. Help.
It took me forever but I've finally got about $1,500.00 saved up and want to buy something. Problem is there's so many different cards I want. Do I go big on one card or a combination of smaller ones? What do you think would be a smarter choice? Looking for what would have a better chance of investment and greater appreciation over time. Having one expensive card would be nice but so would having a couple cards. Cards would be in psa 10. I would like to see what some of you would pick and why. One card or mix it up from the list below. Remember $1,500. Also, this is something I would like my newborn son (2 weeks old today) and me to share when he gets older. I would love to go through my ongoing collection with him later in life. Here's a list of the potentials:
2003 Topps Chrome Lebron James
1982 Topps Traded Cal Ripken
2011 Finest Refractor Mike Trout
2011 Topps Update Gold Jose Altuve
2010 Bowman Chrome Prospects Jose Altuve
2008 Topps Update Gold Foil Clayton Kershaw
2008 Topps Update Gold Foil Max Scherzer
2000 Bowman Chrome Tom Brady
1992 Stadium Club Brett Favre
1991 Score Supplemental Emmitt Smith
1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera
2013 Topps Update Gold Nolan Arenado
2014 Topps Update Gold Mookie Betts
I could go on and on but I have to stop somewhere. Thanks everyone.

Lebron will make another jump after Lakers win title. xD
Go big.
First off, congrats on the birth of your son!! Trout and Brady are probably good bets, not a modern basketball collector outside of Jordan and 86 Fleer so can't help there. Actually don't like much modern stuff at all but if you like it, I say go for it. I personally think Kershaw stuff is underrated and after his career is over, I think he will be looked at in the same light as Koufax...I could be wrong. But, my question would be, why not look at some vintage stuff, ie, Mantle's, Clemente, Koufax, etc? Still a lot of modern stuff unopened but not vintage. Whatever road you choose, best of luck to you and your family!
I would go Trout or Brady off that list for modern. If I had that much to spend, I'd look into something vintage of a HOFer like Mantle, Clemente, Mays, or Aaron.
Off of your list, I would also definitely stick with Trout , Brady and Lebron. Unless The Crisser gets his wish and the market bottoms out, those 3 are about as safe a bet as there out there. I also think Betts has a lot of potential as he is a great player on a high profile team that should compete for years (think Jeter).
After considering it further, here’s some ideas -
Get the two ROY winners from this year in PSA 10 - for the little man. Cool no matter how their careers go (Acuna, Ohtani, Andujar or whomever it ends up as).
Get a box of 2018 Bowman and a box of 2018 Topps from to rip on a future birthday - yours or his.
Get YOUR favorite players rookie card in PSA 10. Give it to him to him day down the road.
See what’s left over and blow it on the best card you can get from the list you created above.
Some fun activities, some shared memories, some connection to year of birth and some investment.

Congrats on your baby and your $1500 I suppose, what is your favorite sport? If BB I would go Trout. If BK I would go Lebron and if FB I would go Brady as my big purchase. In the case of the Lebron (my favorite since I am a BK collector primarily) you should have enough to get the Lebron and then also a Trout 2011 Topps Update. While the Trout Update isn't on your list, I would rather have that card to pair with the Lebron then a lesser player. Generally speaking I would go with the best player possible when deciding on investment possibilities. From your list, it would be Lebron, Trout, Brady for their respective sports.
Thanks for the input so far guys. I am a huge baseball fan first but I understand that I need to delve into other sports as well to have a better well rounded collection. I've got a few graded cards from the other sports as well. Looking forward to seeing what others say. Buying a few 2018 boxes from my son's birth year sounds like a great idea. I was thinking vintage as well as a possibility but I love modern. Looked at 1953 Topps Mantle PSA 2.
As many have said here, I'd go with Trout out of the guys on that list.
Trout. Lebron and Brady are also good. Good luck.
I'm primarily a golf collector, so I'd grab:
1965 Bancroft Tiddlers PSA 8 Arnold Palmer RC (~$1300-1350)
1971 Barratt Famous Sportsmen PSA 8 Jack Nicklaus "RC" (can be had for ~$200 if patient)
As others have stated, stick with icons of whatever sport you choose if investment is a significant portion of motivation.
Trout update RC.
Lebron, Trout, or Brady - go with top superstars of the game. Others that are good values in my opinion - Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Albert Pujols.
I already have a Trout Update. I love that card. Also have the Update Gold version in BGS 9.5. I wish I could afford more Trout's.
For $1,500, I would buy the nicest 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain rookie or the nicest 1957 Topps Bill Russell rookie or maybe the nicest 1948 Bowman George Mikan that I could find.
For that kind of money, go for a sure fire HOFer who will always be in demand. Stay away from Altuve, Kershaw, Arenado, Arenado, and Betts. They could could hold value, but the bottom could fall out.
I am firmly in this camp. I would add the James Topps Chrome and add another Trout Update (even though you already have one) over the Topps Finest Trout. Tom Brady Bowman Chrome would be next on my list.
I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball
Got to use the right "bait" to "catch" more Trout.
Depends somewhat on price point and what you consider a RC, this seems to be the most desirable card: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-SP-Authentic-Golf-Tiger-Woods-ROOKIE-RC-PSA-DNA-10-AUTO-900-PSA-10-PWCC/142941410900
I like the 96 SIFK for the RC personally since it's 5 years earlier, PSA 9s have escalated from ~$1100 pre-win to over $1700 right after. There's a fair amount of PSA 10s graded, but I haven't seen one sold in quite a while. Likely a ~$10K card again now.
Having a baby and an extra $1,500 at the same time is quite an achievement.

1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
A low-grade Cobb, probably an F50 or a York or something from 1928. I like the W572 too and there would be a chunk of change leftover as well. Not sure if the T213s are still available <$1,500 but if they are I would hop all over a red portrait. REA has an SGC 20 in their auction that just went up (I am in no way affiliated with REA or the aforementioned Cobb card).
Arthur
I went with the 2003 Topps Chrome Lebron James RC PSA 10. Card arrived today and is a beauty.
That is a great choice.
Football will be dead when your kid is 50. Basketball will be a dominant sport all over the world.
Let's see that bad boy
Baseball: Vintage graded HOFers. (Can't go wrong with a Clemente RC or some nice Mantles)
Basketball: Jordan Inserts and rookie stuff (super fire and they keep rising in price like no one's business).
Football: Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Brady, Barry, Montana, Marino, etc...
Well centered rookies of all mentioned above as well.
Good luck!!
I know it's been talked about enough times already but if someone could explain to me...in 2nd grader terms...how to post pictures using a step by step process, I would appreciate it. I'm not at all technology smart. I can start sharing my pickups on these theads.
Very bottom of page. Click on this and choose pics from your phone.
Here's the card. Bad picture but it is a beauty. This is one of the cards that I've been wanting for a very long time.
Congrats on your purchase!
great looking card. Congrats.
