I think that is die rust. Possible restrike?
Very cool!
My YouTube Channel
There just isn't that many graded out there to look at. Its rare to begin with.
I don't think they designate whether its the star in "5" variety or not. The only info on these
I have found is that there are 2 variations, one with, one without.
.
The only one I found like mine also has die rust.....at least I think it is too.
And no, not a restrike.

Wow .... beautiful slug; the octagonal shape is the icing on the cake
Nice medals!
I have two of the California Gold Discovery Centennial medals, they are quite interesting from a historical standpoint.
The California Gold Rush was a major event in the state's history and early in the 20th century San Francisco's Irvine & Jachens medal company and other companies began striking medals to commemorate it.
A favorite medal design was based on the octagonal $50 gold coin or "slug" issued by Augustus Humbert's San Francisco Assay Office in the 1850's.

How many slugs do you have now? Will you be making one of your collage pictures?
I think her Pan Pac slug trumps it all....honestly.
@zoins I think it’s going to be 7-8 of them. That includes one or the round California.
I also have a copper slug which is a copy. I might include that in my collage too.
Yes, I am going to make one when I have the ones I want, which is soon.
They are either the rare ones and/or high grades. In some cases the finest graded.

There's something nice about having all slugs, but the California gold theme works too, especially if you have more non-slugs
You are right @zoins this will be easy.......I’ll make 2 different collages

Do we know if Irvine & Jachens made the two medals in this thread, miner standing and kneeling?
Here's their website: http://www.irvineandjachensbadges.com/
And their history page: http://www.irvineandjachensbadges.com/about_irvine_jachens.html
That collage (or collages) sounds great Stef... Look forward to seeing it. You always have such nice coins/medals/slugs....Cheers, RickO
That is a very kind thing to say @ricko I'll be sure to post them.

Nice piece.
Can you please tell us why they were celebrating something in 1922?
. Sure, I guess I neglected to give some background.
.
Days of ‘49 celebration brought many thousands to Sacramento in 1922
Link
.
. Quoted from the link above
It was during that week that a well-planned festival, called Days of ’49, brought large crowds of people to various parts of Sacramento.
The reenactment was held on the Sacramento River at the foot of R Street and Hobart Bosworth portrayed Sutter.
Following this attraction, Bosworth, in still portraying Sutter, was escorted to Sutter’s Fort at the head of a large parade, which also included floats, bands and Native Americans portraying Indians of that time.
A 13-gun salute greeted the procession, which was also met by many spectators who had gathered together at the L Street entrance of the fort.
Playing the role of an Indian chief was Edwin B. Normington, great prophet of the Red Jacket tribe of the Improved Order of Red Man in Sacramento.

This Link gives some great Images. Which I posted below.

Excellent background material. Thank you.
I guess my main question why did they do this in 1922, since 73rd anniversaries are seldom celebrated. 1924 would have made more sense.
.
IDK, but a silly guess, they needed to bring money into Sacramento
Nothing really points to a meaningful reason.

Well, I had a chance to add 2 more California Humbert Memento's
I think the are from the 1930'3-1940's when looking at T. J. Jankovsky's
"Reference Guide for Collectors of So-called Slugs and Facsimiles"
Here is what I think mine are. If you think differently please don't hesitate to help me.
