Is this an unheard of scenario?

Meets happens now and then. In some of the Heritage auctions, when they include the EAC grades in the write-ups, there have been instances where the slab and EAC grades are the same. It is not common, however.
So far the EAC grade higher than slab, I can’t recall seeing that on a straight graded piece. It might be possible on a net graded problem coin. One of the good things about EAC grades is that they give problem coins their due. This is especially true for the rare die varieties.
HA just had a large group pedigreed to Red Headed Copper that had dazzling color. The 1796 w/Pole was PC MS66+RB CAC and EAC 67, higher than I can tell from the color image supplied
Red, uncirculated copper can frequently get higher EAC grades.

Depends on who assigned the EAC grade....these can and do vary widely.
Slab grade left. EAC grade right.
