MS65+ Versus MS66

Here is a dilemma I am facing in my Morgan collection. Within reason I am trying to move my collection to mostly MS66. However, there are times I sit back and say "why". Here is one case. I own two MS65+ 1888 Morgans, one of which is shown below. So do I spend maybe $450 or higher just to say I own a MS66. Other than me who cares? So that seems to be pulling at my reins. What would you do?! My wife by the way in the last photo.

Heck no! News Flash: Unless you get all hung up with the Registry Set craze when it comes time to sell (if you are not able to be patient) coins in the middle grades that are not rare in 65 or 66 will probably get the same offer from a dealer... MS-64 money! :(

Wait for others to respond but if the price from a 65 to a 66 is small (1880-S, 1881-S, 1882-S, 1899-O) go for it just to have a 66 (that is nice enough to CAC) otherwise, take the additional money and buy more MS-65's. As you become experiences, you'll know a quality 65 when you see it.

Seems to me that you have already answered your question; it isn't worth it to you to spend the extra funds for a more-or-less identical coin with a slightly more flattering label.

Cool wife photo, by the way.

That's why I thought my #9 Peace Dollar set was better than most of the others in the top 10. (Not all. Some of the sets ahead of me were fabulous). You can either buy grades and labels....... or coins. Preferably, you buy both, but many people playing the registry game are only going for numbers. I'd rather have a really awesome MS65 than an overgraded 67.

Another way to look at this is this. If you're upgrading, only do so when there is a clear difference. It's unusual to see a big improvement in coin quality between a 65+ and a 66. Going from an MS64 to an MS66 is different, and more likely justifies the transaction expenses associated with a sale and purchase.

Oh, and nice photo. Looks like you might live somewhere between Montana and Texas.

I personally would keep the MS65+ unless the MS66 is a stunner and looks like a MS66+ or MS67.

Several of my favorite Morgans in my collection are MS65+. I certainly wouldn’t upgrade on principle but if I really liked the new coin a lot more it could easily be worth it.

Also, if you can afford some of the better dates in 66 (not even taking about the real keys, but coins like an 1882-O), you can afford the common coins in 67 or better.

I agree with the above, but personally I would need the 66 so that the set matched.

I think your 65+ is a nice looming coin. I wouldn't replace it unless you find a 66 that has better eye appeal.

May I see the MS66? Save the money after all IMHO your 65+ may CAC ;)

I had a dealer tell me once that he thought upgrades were useless unless you can go up at least two grade points.

Slightly off topic, but I’d prefer having a PCGS/CAC 65 than a PCGS 66 for most common date Morgans.

For the current price difference or at the same price?

I say keep what you have and stay “open’” to the idea of an upgrade but with no time frame. Surly a killer one will come around when you least expect it. When you go out spesifically looking, there usually isn’t much on the spot, but give up on it or relax some, they always start showing up! At least that’s how it works for me.

Buy and enjoy the coin, i have seen plenty examples here of 66's and 67's that look horrible to me, ur 65+ looks great to me

Your 65+ looks nice but might start turning in the holder.
It might just be the images, but it looks like some dip residue is starting to rear its menacing head.....

My question would be, are you collecting coins or numbers? Your coin looks very nice... so if you are collecting coins, then keep it and be happy. If collecting numbers, then you have a different issue...Cheers, RickO

The 66 would have to look a LOT better. The 65 is a nice coin, besides if your wife is into horses you better hang onto the extra $. My daughter has horses and I tell her we can ride them to the poor house.

Or make porterhorse steaks out of them.

I would keep what you already have unless a 66 comes along that looks incredible!

I would compare coins side by side to make a decision. Good luck. Nice coin!

A properly graded 66 should be finer than a properly graded 65+. If the coins are not properly graded then all bets are off.

Many cannot tell the difference between a 65, a 65+, or a 66. Certainly there are some who can!

Eye appeal is usually more important than technical grade. With similar luster and surface preservation, a 66 should be a nicer coin than a 65+, though the difference is probably small. If it's worth it to you, go for it.

I new here so bear with me please. I collect Morgan dollars which are. in MHO, the most beautiful coin we ever made. That one you have is a beaut. I have one 66, many 65 & 65+, and the 65s will do just fine. I have some as low as Fine and, as I was told years ago, buy the coin not the label. Good luck. :)

Oakdale, the last time I went through there I was on my way to the casino probably 10 years ago.

I have several 65's and 66's of the same dates that if I had to pick which one to keep, I would keep the 65 about half the time. It is just a number. +'s aren't even considered by CAC. If it says 65+, they consider it a 65, which would get a green bean.
