I am thinking of sending my Peace dollar off for graded, what grade do you think it is? It worth it?

I don't think it will grade high, but it is a Vam 1i. Not sure if there is a premium for that one or not. If you are grading it as preservation for yourself, go for it! If you think you will be selling, I would say do not send.

    Just curious......what is a Vam1i on a 23-P?

VAM's are like Overton Numbers, they are basically a way to track the die pairing and states for the Morgan Dollar and Peace Dollar series. So every Morgan and Peace Dollar is a VAM.

I never thought of it that way. That could run into a LOT of Vam's!

There are tiny premiums on Peace dollars these days; with the common ones you have to get a gem grade to justify the submission; if you are talking economy with 20 coins, and you do FedEx ground both ways you can get the per coin cost to around $22; less for bulk submissions. And what happens if they call the coin AU58; not out of the question with nice Unc. looking coins with a little rub.

Even GEM BU Peace Dollars aren't worth submitting.

The coin has to be a bona fide 66 to justify the grading costs.

This example is nowhere near a 66. As others have stated, enjoy it in a flip or generic slab or Dansco.

I don't know what type of error your coin has but IN GOD WE TRUST, TRUST is spelled with a U not a V...your coin IN GOD WE "TRVST" looks odd.

It is that way by the original design. There is some great information about Peace Dollars available for free online. Welcome to the forum!

Is it worth it? Only you can answer that. I say no, but I have also spent a small fortune on booze in the past, that was flushed right down the toilet the next morning.

Probably a 62, Don't send it in, that is a $25 or so coin(hopefully that's about what you paid) and can be found in roll quantities easily. For a common date Peace Dollar to be 'worth' submitting it needs to make MS65, even 64's sell for only about $40 give or take.

Perhaps a topic for another discussion, but what looks weird about it to you?

As my grandfather says; that's better than a poke in the eye.

You can't beat free, enjoy it as is.

The Peace dollar is not worth submitting, you can slab it yourself for preservation.
@susanner ....Welcome aboard....Can you be more specific? It looks like a normal reverse of a Buffalo nickel..... Cheers, RickO

The Peace dollar is a cool gift, but not worth fees for submission. Cool way to kick off an album. My daughter used to collect these...

Susanner... welcome to the boards... I'm not seeing anything odd about the buff nickel.

I opened the obverse image in a separate window and blew it up - based on that image, I can see hairline scratches that would make the coin a 61, 62 at best. Definitely not worth submitting.

Why do you want to "send it off and get it graded?"

Who convinced you that "grading" was necessary or desirable?

As others quickly noted, it's a common Peace dollar in common condition with very little collector premium over silver bullion. Don't waste you money with "grading" until you understand how coin grading works and when it is beneficial to YOU!

  • SilverProofQuarter1883SilverProofQuarter1883 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just want to experience sending in at least one coin so I know what to do with future valuable coins, just want to know what people would say about the posted coins if I graded them. Not exactly planning to send them in, just thinking about it.

Sending a single coin will cost you $50 just to prove to yourself that you can fill out the submission form

I actually understand your point here. When I first started collecting around 10 years ago, I too was excited to "submit" my first coin, knowing it was a widget, and knowing it didn't make sense on a cost benefit analysis basis. I considered it a "rite of passage" to becoming a serious collector.

Pretty sure my first Peace Dollar I had graded came back as a 63.

So, in the end, it was, in fact, a waste of money, which is what will happen if you submit your coin. However, maybe it will inspire you to learn grading, seek out raw, high grade examples, and hone your craft. Best of luck.

Wait until you have a valuable coin in-hand -- one that will add value by authentication and grading....not this ordinary Peace dollar.

If it is the form that bothers you, print some copies and fill them out during the Thursday NFL game that no one watches.... ;)

I would not send it in.
