Those coins are probably now raw so they'll be more difficult to trace.

These were taken from what looks to be an organized group. Theft was during the show, multiple people working together.

I would like to hear more details on this issue - How were the coins taken from behind the table? Was the location unattended? Overnight? This sounds strange... Cheers, RickO

I was told by security it was and older man w/a dealer badge. That shook them pretty good. They said they got him on tape. Not sure what they meant but they said he dove into the bath room and hid the coins and then walked out the back door.

They said he hit more then one dealer

I never understood why dealers just don't follow every ones handles. We do like hawks. One coin out for us is really bad and expensive.

They said they will get him, they have a lot of info and visual. I sure hope so

I hope they catch the scumbags and recover the coins.

So if he left them in the restroom then they must have video of someone else picking them up?

FWIW, I wanted to tell another store here to change their sign from bathroom to restroom since it's not possible to take a bath in there.

They said they had the guys in rafters seeing him and one tape

I don't understand why they could not get him there.

Doug Davis said he is waiting for cert. numbers.

Was this in real time where he could have been apprehended or was it from tape review? Seems pointless to have that kind of security if they don't act. If I was in your shoes, I'd ask the promoter for a refund of some show expenses.

Guard Tackles Suspected Coin Thief In Long Beach

    https://youtu.be/3c1l036Dx7g

This surveillance video shows Positive Protection, Inc. security guard and former New York City Police homicide detective Patrick Coward on the left as he immediately chased and tackled a suspected coin thief when the suspect tried to flee from a coin show in Long Beach, California on Friday, June 10, 2016. His alleged accomplice is then stopped at the door while carrying a backpack with a reported $300,000 in rare coins believed stolen in an earlier theft in the San Bernardino, California area.

The current theft with the coins in the OP was done with several people working together. The coins have not been recovered. The dealer was distracted while being robbed, so it is unsure how much time elapsed from the robbery to realizing what happened. I have not talked to him since he reviewed a neighbor dealers tapes.

It is hard for coin show security, they are not police and often cant do as much as then want to when faced with thieves.

Do they even convict these folks and put them in jail for a long time if they are caught? I thought I remember someone posting that some dealers won't even press charges even after a thief is caught.

Sure is a black eye on the hobby anytime you hear about theft, burglary, or robbery. Theft and burglary ends up as a misdemeanor many times so what's the real deterrent?

After one theft loss about 18 years ago I realized I would be crazy to continue to set up with substantial numismatic material without much profitable business activity with the huge risks of loss that have only gotten worse.

Bruce is a great guy, and it's a shame that he (or anyone) got hit. I'm keeping my eyes peeled.

This makes me sick. No matter what I'm doing, if a dealer friend calls and asks me to watch his table while he has to go to the bathroom or do a submission or see another dealer etc, if I'm on the bourse, I stop what I'm doing and go help. To me it's the same as a boat captain hearing a distress call in terms of not questioning and dropping everything to go help if they need it.

Well, traveling back across the country to testify or whatever can discourage pressing charges esp. when the coins are recovered.
