Just lookin'. The faces on Liberty of these presidential dollars seemed different. Not sure what I'm really looking at, or for.

That left eye socket looks deeper in #2 and the chin line is also more pronounced. IMO. Peace Roy

I did the same thing, looked at cents. Found an 1890 Indian Head and 2 rolls of wheat cents.

Siriusblack, good for you. .....And for all you newbies; keep posting. No matter what negative feedback you get from the old timer know-it-alls, keep posting. This place needs some fresh blood.

P.S.. I'm ready for the backlash. I can take it. And I don't care. Bring it on.

@Smudge found a 1959-D and a 68-D for older. Found quite a few upgrades to newer memorials I already had so I swapped out.

Found a really nice 1979 which is my birth year! I rarely find Philadelphia mint coins here on the west coast so that was nice!

@djm Nice! Mine were mostly moderns since they were just rolls from my bank.

Upgrades are good. Mint sets are inexpensive and can be a good source.

I'm an oldtimer with 55 years of coin meddling and I agree with you 100%. Give a YN enough time and the questions will improve and even help other new YN's. When they continually hope to find the diamond in the rough, I call that perserverance. Maybe they don't have the money to buy the pregraded rarities and as most collectors would admit that at their young age they did not either.

As to Siriusblack's question, I weighed one of my cent containers and it weighed 15 pounds. As far as I can guess cents have been going in to that container for 40 years along with another that is about 7 pounds. Neither ever searched. I'm hoping my grandsons will take the Whitman albums I got them last Christmas and try to complete the later years out of these containers. At least, that is my goal. Good luck to all collectors and an enjoyable Labor Day Holiday as well.

@Smudge I got the Dansco with proofs from late 70’s on. I’d never had a proof before so my friend that runs the local coin shop helped me understand what Cameo and deep Cameo are and how to pick the best ones. Who knew not all proofs are alike!? :D

    @Timbuk3 Thanks for the encouragement! !!! :#

@jesbroken I hope your grandsons get interested! No one in my family ever paid much attention to coin collecting.

@Hydrant I didn’t know anyone personally that was interested in numismatics so I’ve had to buy books, ask questions at the coin shop, and bother all of you nice people to learn!

Hi Sirius, I'm about to come off a month break after searching through tons of boxes this year! Have you ever tried randomly buying penny rolls at old 7 11's? Earlier this summer at a stop I got 3 old looking rolls and there was nothing newer than 82 and it looked like that was when they were wrapped. Some were crusty and some toned but the best one I thought only graded to a 65. A couple of other good spots I have found are little town banks where I have found plastic rolls with nothing newer than 2010. And truck stops that have there own coin machines behind the counter.

  • SmudgeSmudge Posts: 9,694 ✭✭✭✭✭

Maybe get some rolls of junk silver coins and some old time Whitman folders and start filling them. Fun and you always have junk silver value to fall back on. I have found unc fb Mercs going through junk silver.

@CoinscratchFever Never occurred to me that you could get older rolls places, thanks! I should buy them when I’m in the Midwest too, maybe I’ll get some Philadelphia coins too!

@Smudge I do like mercury dimes. I’m just trying not to stretch myself to thin :D

The truck stop machines get coins from all over the place. And typically the machines are old. The hunt continues :)

  • SiriusBlackSiriusBlack Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭✭✭

@CoinscratchFever I’ve never even heard of a truck stop machine!

Yea, I didn't either until I walked in one day looking for a few penny rolls. Tell them you want $20 worth and they will send you to the service desk, where the truckers pay for their fuel and buy showers lol. Behind the counter the machine will look like a big HP printer with drawers at the bottom. I first asked for $3 and I saw some nice old reds through the clear bag so I went ahead and cleaned her out.

A guy called this morning asking about the price of gold. . I said "Less". He asked : "Less than what ? "
I thought for a moment and pondered : " a pound of weed, a bitcoin, a share of Amazon ", and said ; "Yesterday".

Today, I drove out to the small town bank again, they didn't have any fed boxes but sold me $50 of customer rolls. There are at least ten different types of rolls. But, I'm really excited about the red rolls with the SPR-TCW01 (what ever that means). The first one I opened has nothing newer than 1990 and with two almost perfect 89s

@CoinscratchFever Those are some fancy towels! :# Looks like an awesome catch! I got 4 more from the bank today, but I am definitely going to have to branch out and see where else I can find to get rolls from!

Luckily my home bank takes them unrolled in boxes at no charge. I did coinstar for a bit but that costs 12c a buck and is slowww.

Yea, that is a pretty fancy towel, not sure where that came from. But probably not walmart :)
