Original Roll of 1943 P Steel Cents

Some friends asked me to look at deceased Father in Laws Coin Collection. Coins were collected from circulation, so two bankers boxes filled with buffalo nickles, Indian cents, 90% silver ect. The only two items that have collector value are a VF 1908-s Indian cent and an original roll of 1943 P steel cents, still in the "First National Bank of Chicago" original bank wrapper (one end has been opened). The Father in Law supposedly got the roll from the bank in 1943.

I'm just helping out some friends and want to give them some idea of the value for the steel cents. The coins are surprisingly nice, great luster, no corrosion and very little spotting. I don't collect these types of items, so any help on value would be appreciated.

I know it makes it hard, and I am sorry I don't have pictures.

Many “original bank wrapped” 1943 cent rolls on eBay sold for around $125. If you can identify the coin’s mint location, if there is, that would be helpful.

Because the roll has been opened on one end I doubt if it has any premium for being a roll. The individual coins may be nice but the question is: Will it be worthwhile to pay slabbing costs? Unless they come back as very high grades the answer is probably no.

Yeah, I’d say the value’s around $125 but probably decreased in value since one side is open. About $100 on a good day.

If you have any of these, they would be worth a significant premium.

I have two of those '43 OBW rolls... well, I did open one last year (after having them for twenty years) and the coins were pristine with mint luster. Did not check for the DDO... forgot that. The other roll is still intact. Cheers, RickO

I've been tracking an unopened roll of 1943-P's on ebay that were listed for $170, but no takers. An opened roll wouldn't have quite as much allure but still, there might be some nice coins in the roll. I'd say that it's hard to estimate a good number for the market price without inspecting the actual coins.
