Vintage Football thread

With the start of the NFL season right around the corner I figured I’d break out my Vintage Football cards and post some pics. For you old timers here I decided not to bump the original thread since most of the members there don’t post anymore. I am kicking it off with some of my favorites from my favorite set the 1952 Bowman Large. Heck I might be the only one posting in this thread....

Nice! I'd like to post some as well as I've been working on some vintage sets, however, before I do, is this a raw card thread or raw and graded?

There are no rules my friend! I love Vintage Football regardless if they are raw or graded. For my collection I prefer lower grade with good eye appeal that I can actually hold and enjoy without fear of losing hundreds of dollars by a simple ding on a corner. Please post anything you want

Fair enough, I figured I'd check first as most all of my graded items are Dallas Cowboys. :) Here's a little of each. This is one of my favorite vintage Dallas Cowboys cards:

I'm working on a few mid-1960's raw sets as well, here's a couple of pages from the 1965 Philadelphia gum football set:

This is kind of a tribute post as this player passed away last month. I think he's under appreciated by Cowboys fans having played most of his career next to Bob Lilly. However, 97 sacks (Cowboys stats), 5x Pro-Bowl, 1x 1st team All-Pro and 3x 2nd team All-Pro speak for themselves. From 1964 through 1967 he led the Cowboys in sacks with a high of 18.5 in 1966. RIP.

The last line of the back of the card says it all:

Here's another of my favorite 1960's Dallas Cowboys cards - hopefully the senior committee will get it right and put this man in the Hall of Fame. In the era of Nitschke, Butkus, Robinson, Nobis, Huff, Lanier, Bobby Bell, etc. Howley was a 5x 1st team All-Pro - 5 consecutive seasons from 1966-1970. He was a 2nd team All-Pro in 1971 and a 6x Pro Bowl performer. He was also the first non-QB to be Super Bowl MVP and the only winner in the Super Bowl era from the losing team (Super Bowl V).

The 4th player inducted into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor, the man about whom Tom Landry said “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anybody better at linebacker than Chuck Howley,”. Remember, he coached Sam Huff with the Giants... The great Chuck Howley:

56 Topps football are the best looking vintage football, in my opinion, out there. When they have the color and focus like those posted in this thread, they are gorgeous. Mother of God on the PSA 8 1948 Baugh. Good grief. I'll add some pics here and there, still debating getting a really nice CCD scanner but for now, phone pics. I'll start with my low grade Ollie rookie. I'm doing a Football HOF players set and a 1st ballot set but am under no illusions about ever being highly ranked in either, ain't happening for many reasons LOL. So I'm looking for cards I'm happy with, that I can have fun collecting, and that would look like cards I would have bought ungraded back in the 80's.

That’s what attracts me to 50’s football, the cards are colorful pieces of artwork

Topps really hit a home run and scored a touchdown in 56 with their designs.

The little town in central PA I live in has a large number of Dallas Cowboys fans. Yes, that's right, here in Steelers and Eagles country (with a number of Redskins fans too oddly enough). Much of that has to do with this guy. His grandmother was a substitute teacher here and he would visit and bring along friends named Harvey (Martin) and Ed ("Too Tall" Jones). Great group of guys by all accounts.

The Manster, Randy White. There are 18 of these PSA 10's and at least 2 of them are in this same small town - which I think is really cool:

Played for the Raiders and then was their head coach from around 1979 to 87. SB win in '81.

For me, best remembered for that season and the SB win with Plunkett running the show. I don't think he was the starter at the beginning of the season?

Love this topic! I started collecting vintage football HOF rookies as a kid in the junk wax era, took a long break, then jumped back into the hobby a couple years ago and picked up where I left off. I’ve assembled the full run from 1948-1979 minus Bednarik, Namath, and Biletnikoff. I also love the oddball stuff, like the 1969 Glendale Stamps and especially the 1972 Sunoco Stamps, with all their HOF prerookies and rookies. It helps that I’m only interested in raw, low-to-mid grade copies; that keeps this pursuit from becoming a budget buster. My largest, and greatest, single purchase was a 1963 Fleer lot with one Dawson and three Alworth rookies for $275. Sold off two of the Alworths for about $350 after eBay fees, which meant I landed my Dawson and Alworth for nothing, plus about $75 in my pocket! I was ecstatic.

    A couple pics...

Future HOF member Johnny Robinson’s trio of rookies, if you count the 1961 Fleer Wallet Picture, which I do!

The “free” Dawson and Alworth rookies.

Rarest HOF prerookie (or rookie, for that matter) from my all-time favorite set.

Love the 1977 Topps Mexicans. Landed the Largent direct from Mexico for a bargain.
