Glad that the passing of Neil Simon is getting the proper respect.

Only a yellow-bellied draft-dodger would dispute that
Consider that this comes from someone whose Dad was KIA from "friendly fire" and should likely be classified as a "loser" based on current "social norms"
There was a recent thread that got deleted. Before it got deleted, I posted my displeasure that the flag above the White House was raised to the top after being at half mast for just one day after the death of a Senator. It turns out that my reason for being upset was unfounded. I had no reason to be upset. Due to my ignorance, I was unaware of the long-standing customs and protocol in THE FLAG CODE OF THE UNITED STATES.
Therefore, I wish to apologize to the folks at the White House in charge of US flag protocol and anyone who saw my post. Thanks also to the mods for allowing that "rule breaking discussion" to continue for so long. I learned something I consider to be important from it.
PS Apparently, I was not alone in my ignorance. Recently, the wishes of fellow citizens, also unaware of the rules governing the display of our flag, have been acceded to and the flags over government buildings will stay lowered for a few days. In this case, I think it was a good thing to ignore the rules.
Which is preferred, half mast or half staff?
Great question! One must be more correct. Might even depend on which part of the armed forces is using the term. Any idea where to look for the answer from an "authority?"
Insider, What is the preferred action required according to THE FLAG CODE OF THE UNITED STATES for the greatest Nation On Earth's Flag, that being the United State of America, if the USA flag touches the ground?
Google "Half staff versus half mast" for an explanation of the difference.

Thanks: "In American English, a flag flown halfway up its flagpole as a symbol of mourning is at half-staff, and a flag flown halfway up a ship’s mast to signal mourning or distress is at half-mast. The distinction does not run deep, though, as the terms are often mixed up, especially in unofficial contexts."
Half Staff: Flag pole, half mast: ship, at sea or in port.
Exception: If the flagpole was once a mast, then it is still called half mast. Several US Navy ships have had their mast removed when the ship was scrapped, etc. and converted to a shore based movement, but the naming convention stays.
Also, legend is that inside the gold ball at the top of the flagpole is a razor, a match, a service pistol with 1 round, and a cent.
Lore has it that the razor is to cut down the flag then the enemy is storming the gates, the match to burn the flag, the pistol to defend the action (or give the person a way out, so to speak) and 1 cent so the United States will not be insolvent.
Trivia Question that can earn some money: The top stripe and bottom stripe of the flag are dedicated to 2 different states, easy to remember, what are they and why?

I’m going to guess Delaware and Rhode Island, the 1st and 13th states. Could also be DE and PA, the 1st and 2nd...
Interesting, thank you all for sharing !!!
Half mast - ship
Half staff - land
Fal staff - beer
