1965 nickel with 5 full steps?

Was wondering if this nickel would have a shot at getting a 5 full step designation from pcgs.. thoughts??

Maybe, but the damage to the cheek will lower the grade.

Agree with @Smudge. Also hard to see from that pic.

Not from that photo. 2nd and 3rd steps from the bottom left are merged....or maybe someone is sitting on the steps?

Looks five steps but I think see a "hit" thru several steps on the right.

I can't even remember when the steps got so important.
But then too I can't remember when full bell lines went nuts.
I always picked Franklins by the roundness of the balls at the bell hanger. :/

The close-up shows a bridge on the third step between columns one and two. If it's truly there and not the lighting or image, it would preclude this from being 5 full steps. The bottom step (#1) is not there so all above that have to be uninterrupted.

When they are close like this, it can go either way, Good luck. Pretty sure that is a SMS example, right?

I didn't think it was an SMS from the OP's pictures, but after looking through mine, and then at the pictures again I think it almost has to be an SMS. The steps sure look better than any of my business strikes, but do look similar to a couple of SMS coins I have. Seeing as how PCGS has only graded 1 FS 1965 non-SMS coin, if it were indeed an business strike, it would seem worthy of further explorations.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

  • it’s just a holder my grandad used on some of his coins.

Maybe, but ya have to send it in, NO GARANTEES, I have one similar but I don't want to waste grading fees, plus the fact that they may call it a SMS

This one is already in a business strike PCGS MS65 holder..........all it needs is the FS. :)

They default to SMS and it's nearly impossible to get them to call it otherwise.

It's got a small shot at FS.
Worth rolling the dice I think, as presently there's only 1 graded FS if I am not mistaken.
Then again, if there's only 1, your coin will have to be "all there" to make number 2.
(Perhaps I should rephrase the previous sentence...lol)

Based on the pictures, I do not think it will make FS.... might be worth a shot though, based on the opinion of others here....Good luck, let us know....Cheers, RickO

  • Thanks everybody for your responses. I think I’ll go ahead and send it in to pcgs and pray they don’t default to sms lol. From what I’ve read on several different forums is that there’s not a clear cut way to determine 100% whether it’s a business strike or sms?
