I’ve always wondered what auctioneers in other fields are actually saying....

Turns out, nothing! Just filler.

As a professional auctioneer and not an auction “performer” I find EVERY word meaningful. If the potential buyers do not understand where the bid is and where it is going they may very well be motivated to not bid. The days of confusing the bidders and strong arming them to buy at “your price” is long over.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

I can remember Mr. Sonny Henry doing the auctions at the Summer Seminar, mid to late 1990s. He would chant 'farm auction' style and in particular a number of east coast numismatists would be confused or very confused. At least once it had to be explained to certain folks in the crowd what Sonny (a Midwesterner) was doing.

If your bored while watching a live auction online, turn on the closed caption. The translations are hilarious.
