1898 IHC date error

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 9,205 ✭✭✭✭✭

The number 1 on the obv is not the usual shape. No damage on or around the left side of 1 where the missing part of the number is. Anyone see this in an IHC date of any year. Thanks. Peace Roy

Looks like it was hit by something during circulation.

Yup, I saw the one date example with the missing 1 foot tip. So maybe die date edge break failure. Let's see who else shares. Peace Roy

People can correct me if I am wrong, but an edge break on the number would make it larger, not smaller. Unless notched area is the true width and the rest is the expanded area...

Your images are too pixelated to be 100% sure of anything so I say 99.9% damage. For your sake, I hope I'm proven wrong. :)

It appears to be old damage that has 'aged' due to circulation.... JMO....I may be wrong, certainly, but that is my impression without it 'in hand'... Cheers, RickO

I'm not sure what it is that happened with the "1", but here are the photos.

Edited to add: Now that I took a closer look, it looks like PMD to me. I see some rounded gouges on the left edge of the number "1".
