2016 US quarter error?

Good day all!!

I found these today looking for quarters to fill my sets... All of these are 2016, and two are the same run... I am not familiar with the possibilities of having an obverse die issue used on different reverses... Two Harpers Ferry and one Theodore Roosevelt all show the same double die... These are the best shots I can get right now... I will take more with my magnifier later today... Mainly it is in the area of "QUARTER DOLLAR" and the mint mark....

And I also found this!! This is probably not much to those that have far better examples, but this is the most extreme version I have to date... Super neat!!

Okay, that is all I have for now... Any thoughts would always be appreciated... Thanks!!

Have a great one all!!!

I cannot see a DDO in those pictures... perhaps when you get magnified shots we can better see what you are questioning. That being said, it is likely mechanical doubling. I am not aware of any 2016 doubled die quarters. We look forward to better pictures. Cheers, RickO

  • Good day!

I do believe you are correct concerning the DDO... I think I stumbled upon a good number of broad strike coins... Some worse than others... I found another that was even more distorted than the first three... This last one showed signs of distortion on the reverse as well... The others didn't... Maybe these pictures will be more revealing...

Here the "LIBERTY" and the "IN GOD WE TRUST" are very obscured... That is not shadowing... It actually looks like a mirror image under the primary words...

Here is a different coin with the same issue, but less pronounced...

Maybe this is better... The whole "QUARTER" shows doubling at the top part of every letter...

And the reverse of the newest one found...

The last one is the distorted "Harpers Ferry" that didn't come out as clear as I thought... How clear will a distorted word appear?! So...

    Thanks!!!

You have a good eye to catch this stuff but it is mechanical doubling.

The worn dies are common. Keep them if they interest you. Dime is a misaligned die.

Distortion of lettering is often from die wear, coin wear or a combination of both. Distortion usually does not mean broadstruck.

    Good day!!

Thanks so much for the input!!! Ummmmm, I might be trying too hard to get detailed images... Soooooo...

This one is not the worst... The gray area on the surface of the coin is where the metal of the coin looks stressed... Either a defective planchet or the stamping is putting too much pressure on the coin... Like eating an ice cream sandwich... The good stuff squeezes out of the center... That is what the gray area looks like what happened...

That area right above "QUARTER" shows lines going from the center outwards... All the gray area is the same way... All the deformed letters also move the same... The "QUARTER DOLLAR" mirror image is below the letters... The "LIBERTY" mirror image is off to the left of the letters...

Additionally, the really bad coin in the pictures above shows almost the whole obverse with this gray color... Any lettering in the gray area is skewed... lettering in the other areas is normal condition...

I'll keep at it to get detailed pictures... I'm looking for my good MACRO lens... It figures it would be misplaced when I need it now...

    Thanks again all!!!!

    Cheers!!

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Finally!!

I think I have some decent pictures to figure out what went wrong with these coins... I don't mean to bore anyone with this!!! I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this issue... All the same coin at the same time... I think they will get bigger if you click on them...

    Cheers!!!

Looks like md on the quarters and the alignment on the dime is cool but common. Keep looking, there's all sorts of errors out there. Peace Roy
