Did someone lose a coin at the ANA?

NapNap Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found a coin on the floor yesterday. It was in an unmarked plain envelope and sitting on the floor nowhere near any dealer tables or people. I picked it up and did not recognize it. Later I looked it up and believe it may be something rare and valuable.

Sorry for being cryptic, I won’t give anymore info here. Please contact me if you think you know what I’m speaking of. I would like to reunite the coin with its owner.

Did you notify any of the organizers and ask if there was a "lost and found"?

If I lost an item at a show, I'd be asking the officials.

Agree with this. Turn it in to the lost and found. The owner of this coin may not see your post since only a small number of collectors actually participate here.
At one of the large coin shows in Baltimore I found a coin dealer's check book laying on the floor. It must have fallen out of his pocket while he was walking the floor. I turned it in at the lost and found there.

Good idea to post here... but the Lost and Found is the better method since most collectors are not forum members. However, those who lose a coin at a large show will likely think it is gone forever and may not check. Good luck finding the owner, let us know if you are successful. Cheers, RickO

No, but the underbidder did lose that one.

As it would turn out, the coin was a replica (not marked of course) of a rare colonial piece. It has minimal monetary value. Of course I’d still like to return it to the owner for whatever sentimental attachment there may be. But I suspect whomever dropped it is not so broken up about losing it as if it were something of great value.

So that's what happened to my missing coin; it was round, rare and of fairly high value and I will pay return shipping plus a 10% reward.

So....who told you that? I believe the Walton nickel was once claimed to be fake. But this is one of the oldest tricks around, someone says its fake but buys it anyway only to take it right to the bank. Even the so called experts have got it wrong. But.......it's also possible the guy who lost that coin also got ripped. If you frequent the larger coin shows long enough, you will eventually overhear the laughter and stories on how people get ripped off.

The coin is certainly a forgery. It has a cast seam that I missed initially.

I showed it to Tony Terranova, who I believe is one of the experts in this area.

Rare & valuable... Is there a hamburger on the obverse?

    It's a BIG MAC, not a mere hamburger. :#:D
