Storing coins near a shower

Hi all,

At the moment I have been busy rearranging my house, and my SO wants to put my office where a bedroom used to be, but I’m concerned it may damage my coins. In between the new office and another bedroom is a connecting bathroom, which is used quite often. Most of my coins are in air tites, so do you think the shower’s steam have adverse affects on the coins? Should I just get a ton of silica gel packs? I’ll mention that we are in South Louisiana, so it is quite humid here.

Yes. Don't store your coins near a humid bathroom. Most properly conditioned homes (even in the south) run about 45% relative humidity, which should be ok for storage. Wouldn't be a bad idea to use gel packs in the same container your coins are in.

In your circumstance it sounds like humidity is a problem with or without the shower. Just remember, if you want to use dehumidifiers like silica gel the coins have to be in an air-tight container for it to work, otherwise the silica is just pulling moisture from outside the container. Also silica reaches an absorption point but can be re-activated or replaced. Just google it for more info.

  • I store my coins in a coin cabinet. I wonder if I could put a glass case (like in a museum) over the cabinet and put silica gel in-between the cabinet and the glass.

Buy a safe and store it in a different room away from the bathroom. Or, you could put your coins in Tupperware type containers or large zip lock bags with silica gel capsules.

35 years ago, when I was in California in graduate school, my grandmother placed a collection of Indian Head and Lincoln cents in a floor safe in her bedroom closet in my parent's house near Miami. I did not find out about this until 15 years later, after both she and my father were dead. My mother told me about the safe, and gave me the combination. The coins were all originally Ch-Gem BU and ruined. Use indicating silica gel (buy thin metal cannisters that you can bake out in an ordinary oven), keep rubber bands out, and generally keep extraneous paper products, felt, wood, etc. to a minimum. I also scatter half a dozen red Lincolns (from a recent bank roll) in the bottom of each of my safety deposit boxes.

I lived in Florida (WPB) for just over five years...never had a problem since house was air conditioned...However, I always keep bags (large) of silica in my safe. Cheers, RickO

Air tites are nice holders but are not air tight. Yes I know they fit together tight but its still a gamble.
