Ever seen a PCGS Gold Shield coin without a photo in the PCGS database?

RB1026RB1026 Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭✭

Just ran across a coin I like VERY much and everything checks out, BUT there is no photo in the database. What gives? I thought that was one of the main points of the service. Am I missing something?

Is it Gold Shield or Secure Plus?

Secure Plus didn’t always supply photos with the service.

I saw one couple days ago I even called and wrote to PCGS asked about it. They don't know why no photo with it. I passed the coin because I don't want to take the risk.

Not sure how to tell the difference. I thought it was all the same, just a name change for marketing purposes. The slab has the gold shield. However, I have not been able to speak to the seller yet. So, I do not know.

    I thought so too?

I own a gold shield PCGS slab without a TrueView, but it is a sample slab. I bought it because I thought it was cool that there is no TrueView for it. I wasn't aware they exist without TrueViews.

Maybe the owner asked PCGS to pull the True Views.

Is it an online sale? Post a link and perhaps we can look for other oddities such as font on the label or slab type. Cheers, RickO

I’ve seen a proof seated quarter in a gold shield slab for sale online with no true view. The seller had very unattractive photos that didn’t show the reflectvitity of the surface or the colors of the toning. When I asked for better pictures they said that’s the only pictures that have. I passed on the coin because I couldn’t see the true view when entering the Cert number online.

Secure Plus launched in March of 2010. TrueViews were not a part of the initial service. It wan't until July of 2015 it became a part of the newly named Secure™ as a free service. Any TrueVeiw photos taken prior to July 2015 by using the Secure Plus service had to be paid for as a separate option. PCGS did on occasion make TrueViews on random submissions.

Gold Shield Service, replacing Secure™ service, was launched in January 2018.

It's fair to call it just a name change...Secure Plus --> Gold Shield. But along with the relatively recent name change came free True Views (and tweaks to pricing and the submission service).

When PCGS introduced Secure Plus in 2010 True Views were an optional extra. When TV's weren't purchased PCGS instead attached a crude scan from the fingerprinting device that would appear with a cert look-up. Here's one, for example (top image, cert# 18231264). Below that is what the coin really looks like.

Collectors were unhappy about the crappy images. Somewhere along the way PCGS stopped using them. So there may very well be a gap where no coin images are available. I wouldn't be concerned so long as the cert look-up works.

I agree, I have several Secure Plus slabs for coins I submitted prior to the tru views being free and none of them have trueviews.

Interesting. I see an image on my secure plus or what ever it was called back when they first came out. A poor image but still an image. I sent this one in for grading under a quarterly special when the gold shield was first available.
