(I had to look it up - I did not know). Per Wikipedia: "beginning in 2002, the Kennedy half dollar ceased to be struck for general circulation". So it was the FIRST year that they were not made for circulation.
Even that statistic might be open to debate. I recall that several years ago the Fed put in a big order for halfs but then cancelled it after they were produced but before they had been delivered. So, were those coins (not sure which year) "intended for circulation"?

It looks like the 2001 mintages were 20 million+ and there was also mint wrapped rolls. I vaguely remember though that they weren't released to banks and maybe just warehoused somewhere.
Do banks ever order halves except as a favor to customers?
Of the 19.5 million 2001–dated “D” mint mark Kennedy half dollars produced, only 12,334,000 were released into circulation by the Federal Reserve. Of the 21.2 million 2001–dated “P” mint mark Kennedy half dollars produced, none was released by the Federal Reserve into circulation.

Some casinos still use halves, when they have to do a 3 to 2 payout, for a 5 dollar bet, you get 7.50 back, plus the original 5 dollar bet
I pick up a roll set every year. I have them dating back to 2001. The Mint generally strikes about 4-5 million a year, a minuscule number for a "circulating" coin.

I believe 2001 was mint sets only and then 2002 started with the mint wrapped rolls (in addition to being included in mint sets), so I guess 2000 was the last year they were intended for circulation.
Edit: no 2001 was not mint sets only.
I have US Mint rolls and a $100 bag of 2001's. (100 P-mint/100 D-mint).
I stopped getting the bags because the coins inside were truly beat up. (Well, it was in a bag of 200 coins. What did you expect? On the other hand, the $100 bag of Kennedy's are cool. )
Oh, and you can still get $100 bags from the mint...
No interest in rolls of Kennedy's...but I should complete my year set... let that stop back in 2009 or 2010....Have the varieties as well up to that point. Darn, always something else to take up my valuable time - we retired folk just need longer days... Cheers, RickO

Lol...tell my dad that.....he is always wishing the day would hurry up and be done with.... I actually got him into silver (bullion). He enjoys it at a hobby but nothing more. He saves up ounces until hunting season and then trades some for hunting gear.
You're @ the same age as my dad then. He is normally busy with grandkids and the like. He gets bored bc he has 4 sons that do everything for him...lol we kinda spoiled him. But he deserves every ounce of it.

I can never find any definitive info on this. But you seem to know more about this than I do. Thanks for the info
Are you going to break them out and show us? How do the end coins look? Peace Roy

No, I'm not going to break the roll. I've had these coins for @ 5 years. The "enders" are BU,maybe a little toning.
no, 2001 was last circulation strike year.
in 2002, the only place to get them was from the mint direct sales.

Aha! 2001 was struck for circulation but not all released. I recall the mint offered rolls and bags several years later - I picked some up then.

The Mint has been churning out Kennedy collector rolls for years. What you have is half of the 2002 roll set. You can get this year's here:
Kennedy 2018 Half-Dollar, 2-Roll Set
