U.S.N. is United States Navy, obviously...(or maybe not obviously).
The ship appears to be a WW I era ship of some sort....certainly pre WW II.
Seems rather crudely made, with the denticles at an odd angle. Wonder if it was made in a ships machine shop as a challenge coin, or memento of having served on the ship?
Some what sure it's a depiction of the
U.S. Maine which blew up in Havana Harbor
Cuba. Probably one of many medals to
remember the event . Lots of images of the
ship on the internet.
As I think about this more, it could be (I emphasize 'could') a 'trench art' project... I know many sailors worked on these personal projects at sea - ash trays out of artillery cases and other metals... Long months at sea left a lot of time for such efforts. I know many made rings out of silver halves and dollars....so such things were done. Just a thought...Cheers, RickO
Perhaps the token was made as a giveaway during the Great White Fleet's cruise around the world. There is an official U.S. Mint medal showing Teddy Roosevelt and the GWF.

Thx for the details. That was my first thought as well, but I could not recall the name offhand.

I guess this was before the invention of clean coal.

Could be the 2nd USS Brooklyn. Not sure the significance but maybe made of Naval brass and someone who served. Just a WAG.

Appears to be a Connecticut-class battleship. Note the three stacks and the ramming bow.
