1966 Dime error?

Both are 1966 but one has the distinctive look of a silver pre-64 and the blend on the rim is reversed. I have looked at about 1000 and it's the only one with this look, please help. Thanks MB

I would bet the farm it's not silver. I see a copper rim on both dimes.
What you may have there is a circulated S.M.S. dime. One that was in a set and released into the wild.

  • I agree but why is it the only one that has the copper strip on the heads and not the tails like all the others? Oh and thanks I appreciate you taking the time to help out a greenhorn like myself!

The edge clearly shows it is clad.

No idea on reason for the specific color, but it can't be silver with the copper core.

  • The reason for the copper on the heads side and not tails?

Drop each example on the table from about 4 inches high. If they both sound the same and make a thud like all of today's dime do, then both are clad.

If one has a high pitched ring like the pre-1965 dimes, you have a silver piece.

This simple test is even faster and easier than taking a photo.

  • Thanks. I'm going to do this and record it. Email so I might be able to send it to you?

We'll need it on 8 track tape.

Because back in 66 when they got board at the mint they would take the blanks and say which side should the copper core be on and another guy would say lets flip a coin and they would flip a blank and it always got a laugh when he said head or tails................cause it was blank.......ahh nevemind

Neither coin pictured is an error just common change

The thing is you can see the copper core in both of them, there is zero chance either one is silver. The one on the right in the picture might be a a proof or SMS dime but not silver.

Just a common '66 dime... the position of the exposed copper is irrelevant.... Cheers, RickO
