Hi All,
We're having a giveaway on Instagram, and I thought I'd let all of you on the boards know about it. Why Instagram? Well, I've been following the numismatic community there for about a year and a half, and there's a lot of activity, enthusiasm, and promise for a whole new generation of collectors. So why not join up, get involved, share your images and knowledge, and follow us @PCGScoin ?

Radiant Collection: Numismatics and Exonumia of the Atomic Age.

I wonder what the average age of Instagram users is. Probably "under 40?" The average age of coin people here on CU I would peg in the "over 40" range. Hmmm.

I'm well under 40 and on CU! :)

Every time people bring up the whole "death of the hobby" and "younger folks don't care" stuff I tell them to look at Instagram, Reddit, Pinterest, etc. numismatic communities. Usually I just get sarcastic/snarky remarks and sometimes dumb looks as well when in person. This right here is a step towards bridging the generations. Kudos! <3

All good points, but that bridge needs to go both ways.

There are a lot of older people on here who probably never thought they'd be regular Internet users, so for them to be here is a big enough accomplishment. I doubt you'll see them bouncing around to the latest big social site.

The problem for the young whippersnappers is that if they want to benefit from the huge knowledge base that posts here, they need to log on here once in a while.

I am happy no matter where someone goes to further their interest or knowledge in coins, but based on some of the Facebook people who come here for opinions and then defiantly reject any feedback that does not support their agenda, I am not so sure some of those other sites have much to offer in the way of experience and knowledge. But I'd be happy if that is not the case.

There is an option to turn off notifications for different apps/programs. So your phone wouldn’t have to buzz every second.

I think that sort of thing is the whole reason for social media. :#

Agreed. The problem is that the younger folks, as with pretty much all other areas of life, are used to getting tl;dr on the subject from people that went the slow and detailed route. Attention spans are too short for the latest generations to trawl the forums and catch up on all the knowledge. They just want the express route... "get to the point". I'm kind of in between the old boys and the whippersnappers as you call them, so I use both the forums and the social media platforms. Some of these YN's and 20-somethings are genuinely interested, but in dealing with them I can't honestly expect them to come to the forums and catch up. They're still in school, time for hobbies is scarce.
