THIS WEEK I WAS WITNESS TO A VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING AN INJURY SAVING ANTI-INTRUSION BAR

Some time ago I put to pen some of my recollections of “My Life as a Lawyer in Alaska.” One of the described recollections was regarding a case that involved the absence of an anti-intrusion bar in the door of a vehicle. I wrote:

“Another case that had positive consequences for good involved a vehicle manufacturer who had not included side bars in the door panels of the vehicle my client was operating.  The absence of a side bar in the door allowed intrusion into the driver’s compartment.  I was able to settle that claim resulting in a multiple six figure payment to my client and that manufacturer’s vehicles today incorporate side bars in their door panels.”

Ironically, this week a vehicle collision occurred just in front of me that evidenced a side bar protecting against intrusion. The protective bar is also referred to as an “anti-intrusion bar” or “side impact beam.”

Here is a more detailed description of this week’s witnessed collision as I recounted it in a contemporaneous message:

“An accident just happened in front of me today as I was stopped waiting to turn onto Dimond Boulevard from the Minnesota Drive Expressway off ramp.

Simultaneously I heard and saw a blue vehicle hit the side of a white vehicle, lifting it up into the air. Just as it was about to flip over, it dropped back down returning to its original position.

Not having seen the trajectory of the two vehicles prior to impact, my best guess is that both vehicles, each coming from opposite directions on Dimond Boulevard, were turning to get onto the Minnesota Drive southbound on ramp at the same time.

The white vehicle turning left likely failed to yield to the blue vehicle turning right. If that wasn’t the case, then the white vehicle would have had to be in the wrong lane heading west on Dimond Boulevard.

I stayed in place long enough to see that all the occupants got out and that there was another vehicle on the far side of Dimond Boulevard, where the accident occurred, stopped to assist. (I was on the opposite side waiting for the light to turn green before turning right onto Dimond Boulevard.)
