    ARRIVNG Alaska Railroad TRAIN AND DEPARTING TOTE SHIP PASS CLOUDED OVER Mount Spurr VOLCANO AS ERUPTION WATCH CONTINUES:

    An inbound Alaska Railroad train approaches the Anchorage Alaska Railroad Terminal as a Tote RORO (roll on, roll off) Ship departs from the Anchorage Port headed to Tacoma Washington.

    Seen across Cook Inlet is both nearby snow capped Mount Susitna and a clouded over Mount Spurr, the Alaska Volcano that is threatening to erupt and cover 80 mile distant Anchorage in a blanket of Volcanic Ash.

    End of the Month Alaska Volcano Mount Spur Update - Code Yellow (Advisory)

    Reporting for the last day of April from the Alaska Volcano Observatory:

    "Unrest continues at Mount Spurr volcano. Frequent small volcanic earthquakes were detected beneath the volcano over the past day. Most of the earthquakes that are occurring under the volcano are too small to be located. Nothing unusual was observed in cloudy webcam and satellite views.

    Results from the most recent overflight on April 24 show that gas emissions are broadly unchanged from March and remain elevated above background levels.

    Although unrest continues, there have been no changes observed in the monitoring data to indicate that the volcano is moving closer to an eruption. Based on previous eruptions, changes from current activity in the earthquakes, ground deformation, summit lake conditions, and fumarolic activity would be expected if magma began to move closer to the surface. Therefore, if an eruption occurred, it would be preceded by additional signals allowing warning.

    The volcano is monitored using local seismic, infrasound, web camera, and GNSS (GPS) stations along with regional infrasound, lightning networks and satellite data."

    COMPARING PHOTOS FROM THE 1953 AND 1992 PRIOR ERUPTIONS OF Mount Spurr

    Today I located in the Anchorage Museum Archives this image of Mount Spurr's Eruption in 1953.

    The below photo was of one of the three 1992 Eruptions of Mount Spurr. This eruption was about half as explosive as the 1953 one. Note that only in the 1953 image one can see adjacent peaks which are already obstructed by an ash cloud in the 1982 photo. This evidences the more powerful upward lift in the 1953 eruption.

    And here is a video from today, the last day of April, which includes at the end the "cloudy view" presently obstructing the volcano as referenced in the AVO reporting:
