Last week while my adult son Nolan was driving with his two youngest sons, Nathan and Luke, seven-year-old Nathan said in a slow serious tone, "Dad, I have a question." Nolan answered, yes, what is it? In an even more somber tone Nathan continued, "Is Santa Clause real?"
Without missing a beat, dad Nolan answered, "It depends which Santa you are speaking about." If you mean the Santa who visits millions of children on a single night and goes down their chimneys, well that Santa may not be real. There was a nine-year-old girl named Virginia who asked that question many years ago and there is a movie about that titled, "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause" which we can watch when we get home.
At that point two-year older Luke chimed in. He suggested, "Let's ask Siri."
Nolan then posed the question to Siri. Siri answered, "You know, the clothing stores [at Christmas] always seem to be out of red and white fuzzy leisure suits. Just saying."
Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus
Dear Editor—
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’Hanlon
Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
TODAY'S HOLIDAY JAPANESE POUNDING RICE PARTY WITH TAIKO DRUMMERS
The three posted YouTube Videos in the Playlist:
Mochi Tsuki Taikai, or translated as Rice Pounding Ceremony, is held annually in Anchorage, Alaska during the end of the year holiday season. First, In this initial video watch and listen to the drummers as they enthusiastically leap, circle, and pound their Taiko Drums.
Second, in this following video, watch as the first steps of making mochi by hand are seen as a trio work together to in a preparatory smashing of the rice ritual.
Third, in the final video, watch a super cute toddler as she tries her hand at Japanese Rice Pounding with a massive mallet.
(In just the four hours since this third video of the toddler pounding rice was posted today, I have already had over 900 views on YouTube.)
