For those who may find it of interest, here is "The Rest of the Story:"
This is a follow-up to the Halloween Posting related to photos previously posted from a Halloween Weekend visit to the Anchorage Museum. Included was a photographed painting from the late 1800s by Thomas Hill of the Hudson River School artists. As noted, naturalist John Muir had commissioned him to come to Alaska to paint the glacier that came to be named after Muir in Alaska's Glacier Bay.
George J. Stengel was an artist influenced by the Hudson River School painters and their shared subject matter an whose paintings also included seascapes from New England. His life overlaped that of Hill. Although he is identified with the later New Hope School of painters, his work hangs along with those of the Hudson River School artists in the Hudson River Museum.
Above pictured is one of Stengel's New England marine paintings in my possession likely depicting a scene off Maine's Monhegan Island where he spent some summers. The same area had been visited in the 1890s by Hudson River School painters. One of Stengel's paintings hanging in the Hudson River Museum is "Fishing Fleet" which inspired a poem by Harry Kemp titled "In Harbor" that reads, "Trampling under the hissing foam, They have all safely ridden home." The painting (on the cover) and poem (within) were published together in a 1927 "Literary Digest."
Likewise my painting by George J. Stengel exhibits that "hissing foam" with ships being tossed at sea as described by the poet in describing the companion painting which hangs in the Hudson River Museum.
The story of how the subject painting was discovered and ended up in my possession is meritorious in and of itself. When a version of PBS's Antique Roadshow came to the Anchorage Museum some years ago I took it to be examined by the appraisers and was given a value that surprised just like one sees on the Show.
