In 1962, as a 13 year old, I won an all expenses paid trip to the Seattle World's Fair for selling the most newspaper subscriptions. in my state. This weekend I am back in Seattle and here hanging on the wall of my hotel room is a photo from that time with the just completed Space Needle from the Seattle World's Fair visible.
Below pictured is the photo on the wall from that prior era, and below that is the Space Needle as it appeared from my plane window as I flew into Seattle yesterday:
In the intervening years I have flown in and out of Sea-Tac on repeated occasions and whenever my lodging is close to the airport I make it a point to visit the 13 Coins Restaurant located just across from the terminal. Below are photos from last night:
As one enters the high back seats at the bar remind of a ride into the Haunted House at Disneyland:
And when seated in one of the booths, there are (you guessed it) 13 coins embedded in the table:
Since it was a weekend, their specialty not too thick clam chowder was on the menu:
Followed by an entree offering of excellent Veal Parmigiana:
With my companion going for the Fettuccine in Clam Sauce:
The desserts were Mango Sorbet and a flourless cake with Spumoni Ice Cream:
Here are some added photos from here in the Emerald City including the Maple leaves already beginning to turn color and some food fare from the nearby mall:
This is my collection of living hard and soft corals, four fish, hermit crabs, snails, sea stars, serpent stars, spaghetti worms, and probably some plankton.
As we departed Tokyo SkyTree we chanced upon a Bon Odori Celebration.
And although past rush hour, the train was packed as we headed back:
Prequel with selected photos from earlier in the day including the visit to the Asakusa Jinga Shinto shrine and adjacent Sensoji Buddhist Temple in Asakusa:
Then there was the first time for trying the sometimes fatal Fugu (Blowfish) Sushi:
Not your typical Tourist Destination - Spending an afternoon in Japan touring a school designed by Frank Loyd Wright.
In the 1920s Frank Loyd Wright took on the challenge of designing The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. During the Occupation of Japan after World War II it served as the Occupation Headquarters. While the hotel as designed by Frank Loyd Wright has been replaced twice by more modern structures, there does remain in Tokyo a school he designed that has survived the pre- World War II Kanto Earthquake and its devastating fires as well as the Fire Bombing of Tokyo that took more lives than were lost in Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
The story behind the school is as interesting as the fact that it was designed by the greatest architect of all time. As it happened, an affluent Japanese couple had a dream of starting a school for girls that would also instill Christian values. A local architect friend of theirs introduced them to Frank Loyd Wright who just happened to be in Tokyo for the designing of The Imperial Hotel. A deal was struck and Frank Loyd Wright went ahead and designed the main building of the new school and in short subsequent years his design themes were preserved in the building of added wings and an auditorium.
The school continues to today with upwards of 800 girls attending although its campus is at another location in Tokyo . The original school building has been preserved as a cultural asset. As it has undergone restorations to return it to its original form, various discoveries have been made to include a hidden bathroom and a wall mural depicting a scene from Exodus that the girls attending the school had drawn on the occasion of the school's tenth anniversary circa 1931.
Pictured below is the school as it has been restored and returned to its former glory as well as the above referenced pre World War II "Western" style bathroom and the discovered mural.
One of the original desks:
The subsequently added auditorium along with the hidden bathroom adjacent to it that was discovered behind a blocked wall during its more recent renovation:
Note the Japanese instructions that were found still posted in the discovered bathroom which explained how to face using a Western style toilet. Also noteworthy is the placement of the toilet paper holder in a position where it would otherwise have been suitable for a traditional Japanese "squatter."
Note today similar such instructions are still given, prompted by the influx of tourists from Mainland China, although in a graphic form:
Photos of the school's renovation:
One can recognize the similarity of these details to similar ones incorporated by Frank Loyd Wright in his recognizable "Prarie Style."

Working on the highway, I spotted some sassafras trees on the side of the road, pulled some roots, and made some Root Beer.

The Sassafras tree is very easy to identify because it has three distinctly different shaped leaves on one tree.
