Did I just find a piece of the missing Amber Room here in the Northland?

The region of the Baltic Sea has one of the largest amber deposits on the planet as a result of an ancient pine forest from 60 million years ago. The sap that dropped to the forest floor was embedded in the local sediment and compressed by overlying deposits with the resin becoming fossilized.

In 1701 the original Amber Room was built from the Baltic Amber for the King of Prussia. Russia's Peter the Great admired it and as a result the King gifted it to him to cement the Prussian-Russian alliance. The amber panels were then transported to Russia where they eventually ended up in the Catherine Palace in Pushkin just outside of St. Petersburg where a new Amber Room was created.

World War II came along and the Nazis occupied Pushkin and despite the Russian efforts to hide the panels by covering them with wallpaper the Amber Room was quickly discovered and in less than two days the Amber Panels were removed and transported back to what was by then Germany.

At the wars end the amber panels went missing and unless they were made into jewelry that ended up here in the Northland they remain unfound.

At a cost of 8 to 11 million dollars a new Amber Room was constructed over a 25 year period that began in 1979.

Pictured below is my photo of the room next to the reconstructed Amber Room in the Russia's Catherine Palace.

Regarding the fate of the original Amber Room which has been described as "The Eighth Wonder of the World:"

If one simply Googles "Amber Room" it will take you to pages and pages of links related to dozens of theories as to the mystery of what happened to the original Amber Room that was removed by the Nazis from Catherine Palace in Pushkin just outside of St. Petersburg and spirited away to Kaliningrad which was then a part of Germany located on the Baltic Sea.

FWIW, among all the theories about what actually happened to the original Amber Room panels that had been relocated to Germany during World War II, an argument can be made that the most likely appears to be that they ended up in the basement of a church that survived the bombings but then after the fighting stopped got burned in a fire that swept the city due to, ironically, the actions or inactions of the Soviets who had occupied the city.

The veracity of this account is supported by a Soviet veteran who came forward to share his recollections of having gone into that church before it was destroyed in the subsequent fire. He recalls having seen a a small piece of what was the Amber Room while being told that the main panels were stored in the church's basement. This theory is also supported by a book that adopts the same premise but which has not been favorably received by the Russians who don't like the idea that their own people were responsible for the loss of their National Treasure.

However, the Russians claim that the search goes on and every once in awhile reports go out about its almost going to be discovered in some just found underground German bunker or German ship that went down in the Baltic Sea.

For those who find this "National Treasure Hunt" fascinating here is a link to the article regarding the most likely answer:
