My Las Vegas show report (07/25 and 07/26 of 2018)

A couple months back, I booked a cheap package to attend the PCGS member show at Caesar's Palace, since it had been a little while since I attended one. Other than the intense 115 degree heat of the day, it was a blast. I stayed over at Bally's right across the street and ended up with a humongous suite. Since I was traveling solo, it was more like an echo chamber. Still go a kick out of that.

Now for the show. The summer shows are always a bit slow and this one was no exception. More people would turn up as the day went on, but it was nothing like the Philly member show last October where it was packed. But this slowness is a big plus, since it allows you to hang out with fellow coin nerds and the dealers that are there as well. This show allowed me to place more faces behind the names in this forum, along with a person from the Instagram world. It was great to finally meet @Justacommeman (Mark); he was there only for that day to check out stuff, @AuroraBorealis (Wayne) the true, undisputed king of toner Morgans, @BustDMs (Brad), the guy that does the Legend auctions, very down to earth, @TheMan (David Perkins) who I had already bookmarked his site, but meeting him in person was awesome. He does carry some great Bust inventory, Don Ketterling, consultant extraordinaire and a really cool person to talk to about coins and the market in general. I really ddn't get to talk to @ThePennyLady, she was busy showing some folks from NZ some of her wares (which I assumed were pennies). There were plenty of others (dealers and collectors) I shot the breeze with - not everyone participates in the online forums here. Apologies to anyone I missed in the shout out, I'm posting on only a few hours of sleep today. Getting home at 3 AM is a killer!

The folks working behind the PCGS and Legend tables were all nice and friendly; I was talking to the young ladies (Serena, Jessica and Alex) at Legend about Instagram and how the collectors were showing off and selling on that medium. I also shot some videos of their auction items and posted them out there. Plus I managed to pick up a couple more followers that way. Basing on the responses I got on my page, that is probably another good avenue to expand advertising on, especially for showing coin videos.

As for the auction itself, I did attend about half of it. The truly nice coins did sell well, the green sticker surely didn't hurt. Some coins went way over estimate, some just hit it (even with a sticker), and some did fall short. That nicely toned 1923 MS-66 CAC Peace dollar sold for substantially less than it did the last time (about 2 years ago). Too soon maybe? I saw that for a few other coins too. Aurora's toners appeared to fare well in the auction, I think he's attempting to corner all the monsters in his corner! ;)
I watched a few items in the auction, but didn't bid on anything. The closest one I thought about was the 1862 Seated 50c in PF-64, that coin was a real beauty in hand!

As for show purchases, I usually come in here with no real agenda, since it's hard to tell what exactly will be there. But buy I did, so below is the stuff I bought:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The first coin is a cool MS-66 1964-D Kennedy from Mark's Coins. This one just called out to me.

The second one (also from Mark) is an 1864-L Indian cent graded MS-63 BN. That's not a typo, but that coin is RB all day. Has some cool colors too, including some green.

The third one is an 1858 Small Letters Eagle cent purchased from Andy of Angel Dees, graded MS-62. This one looks better in hand, it has PL surfaces that pop in the light.

The fourth one is a cool error that I just had to have. It's a 1998 cent struck on a 10c planchet graded MS-65. I don't really do error coins, but once in awhile I'll add one.

Fifth one is a reverse toned 1922 Peace Dollar graded MS-64, also bought from Mark above. Just liked that reverse!

The last one is a South Africa 5 shilling from 1956, graded MS-65. I apologize for drawing a blank on the name, must get more sleep!

Overall for me it was a great show. Good food, good company and some nice coins all add up to a great couple of days. Until the next report...

Great report! I like the videos you posted on Instagram and your new coins (especially the 1864 1c). That 1923 Peace Dollar was bid up crazy high by me last time. I’m not sure why the winner had to have it since he didn’t hold it very long (and it is far nicer than any of the other toners in that set). Anyway, I got my second chance, finally won the coin and saved myself $2500.

@ElmerFusterpuck can you describe to someone who knows little about Instagram how to use it for buying coins?

Thanks for a great report on a show that I had planned to attend. I LOVE the PCGS Las Vegas shows and have accumulated significant inventory in need of grading. You found some very nice coins.

    Interesting report.

RE: "Other than the intense 115 degree heat of the day, it was a blast. "

Well --- in a way it was a kind of "blast 'furnace' ".

Thanks, it was nice meeting you also! I enjoy putting a face to the online name also.

See you at another show soon.
