1902-O Morgan. VAM-66, Doubled Profile, and Interesting Filled "2"
I purchased this Morgan last Saturday at auction. What initially stood out to me was the attractive gold toning around the rim of the obverse. However; after close inspection I noticed the "2" in date was filled. At the time, I wasn't certain if it was excess "flash," or, a silver metal fragment that was embedded above the base of "2," or even if it was a significant die chip/gouge, doubling, etc. I couldn't do a quick search on my phone bc there was not any signal to pick up connection. So, I bought this one on faith, and pure interest with the "2" in date.
Once home, and after a lengthy time reviewing VAM listings on VAM world, I was pleased to discover that the filled "2" is evident on half a dozen or so 1902-O's! Somewhat ambiguous, showing up on certain VAM's, and not at all on others. From what I gathered it may be a die chip/gouge; yet, appears on LDS Morgan VAM's for year/mint on some. This is what I believe to be a LDS VAM-66.
Weight: 26.65 gr. Condition close to MS64.
Please share in comments, post pics if you have this VAM, or, any filled 1902-O. Thanks for looking!

Nice! One of my Morgan goals is to find an 02-O that has a strong strike that shows full breast feathers. I have been told they are out there, but have yet to find one. Love the gold also! Congrats
That is a nice find, and great pictures, thank you for sharing
Nice pictures and it does appear to be a die chip..... Good research work as well... Cheers, RickO
.
that filled 2 is a common occurance far as i've seen. i'm not saying to this particular vam specifically, as i don't know. but i've seen it a lot. same with that kind of doubled profile.
just read the OP and i see you just essentially said what i just did. doh.
02-o are tough to vam. it helps to have that specific book from alan, i think.
happy hunting.
