Report: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson Planning $10 Million, Winner-Take-All Match

Two months ago at the Players Championship, where Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were paired together for the first two rounds, Mickelson suggested he and his rival-turned-friend Woods skip the tournament stuff and play a "high-stakes, winner-take-all match."

It would appear that the two players are ready to put their money where their mouths are, as a report from Golf.com's Alan Shipnuck suggests the two legends are planning a head-to-head match for $10 million.

In fact, the match is so close to being a reality that it almost happened on July 3 in Las Vegas. "We're working on a different date," Mickelson told Shipnuck. "I thought it was done for the 3rd but obviously it wasn't." Tiger's reps, true to form, declined to comment.

May as well have a Hank Aaron / Willie Mays, Home Run Derby as well!

If it was for 10 mil, a lot of people would be watching it. LOL

Tiger is over the hill. Phil runs over the hill for a double whack of the ball.

In the world of sports $10m is a drop in the bucket. Could be a classic down to the 18th hole putting or a bust with Tiger Triple bogeying a couple of early holes.

Phil's the gambler, no way Tiger agrees without being in form to demolish him.

    Match will never happen then.

I think Mickelson will have a 3 or 4 stroke lead going into the final hole.

There won't be any dramatic finish.

That's my coin flip call, and I'm sticking with it. B)

    Should always be stroke.

Make it interesting. No caddies and each player gets only a single club. That of his choice.

I'll bet this happens sometime in early October, a week or two after the Ryder Cup. If televised, it will be a ratings bonanza.

Prediction: Phil loses due to a stupid penalty. He can't seem to get out of his own way recently.

I would be good for watching a couple of holes...maybe three. Making golf unboring is not easy, and the reason that tournament play works on TV is that someone on the course is always lining up a shot. 4 hours of strolling to the next shot would be tedious, particularly if one of the two falls well behind.

If they're both mic'd up it'll be entertaining regardless, but I'd hope they use a shot clock to speed things up like the recent Euro Tour event too. Thankfully, they won't be waiting on a group ahead to slow them down, and carts could speed things up too.

AAARRRRGGGHHHHH no carts! Golf is barely a sport as it is. Mic'd up would be cool.

They could for ten million just get in separate golf carts and race to see who gets to the 18th hole first.

    No shortcuts allowed. ;)

Great idea... Except ten million should go to the charities of the winner's choice.

With Woods, the money would go to Charity, Sapphire, Alexis, Candy....

I would rather watch them race golf carts at this point

Phil's already conceding, asking for a shot a side on Twitter.

Tiger Woods has more fans than "Arnie's Army." It does not matter who's ahead or who won the match, Tiger gets mist of the press.
