It looks to me like someone wrote in a VBD on the front in black.

[Seriously, there is nothing in that circle.]

I do see some surface aberration in the area you have circled....However, the VDB was not put on the obverse until 1918. I believe you are experiencing Pareidolia ...Cheers, RickO

If you have to look REALLY hard AND use your imagination, it's probably not what you are looking for. Wishful thinking should not play a role in proper coin identification.

Also, since the VDB wasn't restored on the shoulder until 1918, it's very likely that nobody thought of putting it there until 1917-18, making an '09 with VDB on shoulder even more unlikely.

And the circled part isn't the shoulder. . . . . . or is it?

I think it's a regular cent struck on a dime. The black spot indicates copper is present (90% silver, 10% copper). I highly suggest submitting it. These kinds of coins bring hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

It looks like persistence paid off. I'd see what your local B&M dealer offers.

    Thanks for sharing good luck!

OK, Fred, you made me go to Google.

Clouds are starting to build here leading to afternoon thunderstorms. I'm going to stare at them and see how many mintmarks I can find among them. If I find any possible errors, I'll let you know.

I always associated this area as part of the 'truncation' of the bust.

No, ya'll have it all wrong. It's a new error, never seen before.
It has the obverse of a normal 1909 Lincoln and the reverse of a completely different normal 1909 Lincoln.

Why oh why does the OP spend so much time and energy (theirs and and ours) looking for things that don't exist?

There are lots of worthwhile places to search for real errors and varieties. Buy a few boxes of cents from the bank and search for KNOWN varieties and also any stray errors.

So, what I'm hearing is that this is a triple error: a cent struck in 1917 that is dated 1909 with a VDB on the obverse and with a VDB on the reverse...

Why don't you start by just sorting and cataloging what you have instead of over analyzing every single coin you pick up.
