S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Tuesday that the iconic maker of light bulbs and jet engines will be replaced in the 30-stock index by Walgreens Boots Alliance.
GE (GE) was an original member of the Dow in 1896 and has been in it continuously since November 7, 1907.
Being ousted from the Dow is the latest indignity for GE, which is dealing with a serious cash crisis caused by years of bad deals. GE has replaced its CEO, slashed thousands of jobs and cut its coveted stock dividend in half.
"Today's change to the DJIA will make the index a better measure of the economy and the stock market," Blitzer said.

I suspect that the goal was to reflect the 20% of the economy which is now controlled by the so called health care industry.
Walgreen is number 5 of the 30 entities along with J&J, United Health, Merck and Pfizer.
MMM has a hand in the industry but is broadly diversified.
A premier index (any of them) has to be made up of premier entities.

$108 billion in debt at the end of 2017, no profit, and a market cap nearing $100 billion. Can't say I have a positive outlook on GE, at least in the short-term. I do own a small amount of shares though.

There were several reasons why Warren Buffett said the DJIA would be at 1,000,000 within 60 years.
I disagreed with him this time because what he wrote is not accurate. But that might only be the second time I've disagreed. I usually withhold that for comments on which are blatantly incorrect.

I heard on the radio, the lowest valued company in the dow 30 must be worth at least 10% of the highest valued company in the dow. Ge was around 6 or 7% for a couple of years now. Looks like they stopped letting them slide.

Years ago when I worked at a software company I remember some financial suits came in to talk about 401K investments. They heavily touted the DOW index showing how it rarely goes down and has had significant growth since 1929.
Well, DUH.
If you continually drop weak companies from the index and add new strong and growing companies to the index then of course the chart will look good.
I'd like to see a chart of a new index, which would contain all the booted DOW components, before, during and after their tenure in the DOW, adjusted for inflation.
Yeah, I wish the economy of today was the same as in 1918.

Enough is enough! This blitzdud guy is clearly delusional and perhaps dangerous. Blitzdud is clearly a paranoid schizophrenic that has been stalking me for months.
