I’m trying to identify the coin below. I believe it is a Matron Head Large Cent (1816-1835), but the date is completely worn away. Can anyone narrow this down further? I know there were several styles during this time period, but I'm having a difficult time figuring this one out.

  • The straight jaw line and hair curl below the bust are two features I think may help, but I can't seem to find a good resource for differentiating one year from another. Looking at the images in the Red Book, I'm thinking between 1836-1839.

There are very few Large cents that can be ID'ed in low grade, beat up condition. On occasion, a die break is all that is needed. If you cannot see a date or some obvious characteristic most of us cannot help you. Sorry.

Yes, by 18-teens, the large cents had become what Dr. Sheldon called "machine made tokens." There are differences, but they usually small, and pieces that are badly worn or damaged can't be attributed.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • Thank you. I was hoping to narrow it down since there were so many varieties of Coronet Head. The squareness of the jaw really made it look like it was the "young head" version. Thanks anyway!

It would have helped if the hair cords were visible.
