1862 Double Eagle Upgrade

I was reviewing CoinFacts for recent sales of 1862 Double Eagles. I noticed an 1862 $20 PCGS AU50 in an OGH that sold in a Heritage (2016 September Long Beach) action for $18,800. It was part of The Ohio Valley Collection which contained quite a few coins in old holders.
About 1 year later, the same coin was again sold by Heritage (2017 August ANA auction) as a PCGS AU58 for $30,550.
Has anyone seen a coin upgrade by 3 grade levels? Which grading event is closest to the grade that you would give it?

1850 V-5 half dime that went up 3 grade levels (not all at once, though - only one grade was skipped over in 3 reslabs that have been seen at auction):
2006-1 MS-63 Heritage $489 NGC 308337-020 Jules Reiver collection
2014-7 MS-65 Heritage $852 PCGS 09904330
2014-10 MS-65 Stack’s Bowers $881 PCGS 30322342 CAC
2015-2 MS-66 Heritage $1,469 PCGS 30921069
Wow !!!
I haven’t studied these myself to compare it with other 58s or if it’s worthy of the jump. I will say it seems criminal to crack that out of the OGH but that’s a hard case to make to the person who made 12 grand doing it. The current presentation and grade looks boring compared to the the old holder and the conservative grade when they’re side by side.
No kidding.
Comb the hair, conserve the make-up and whalla.
I'd doubt that it jumped directly from 50 to 58....there were probably several interim steps like the half dime example...I like the coin somewhere in the middle...maybe AU55...and prefer the pre-dip color and toning...
I had a Capped Bust Half go from NCG VF-25 to PCGS XF-40 after I cracked it out and sent in raw. Not a huge jump in value however.
I am not sure (based solely on the picture) that I agree with the 58... perhaps a 55...but in hand, well... that is the only way to judge something like this issue... Cheers, RickO
I see different lighting, but both coin images show identical toning. No dipping has taken place
Looks 55 from here
I'm not surprised; tough Civil War date. I've owned a few examples including the "Eagle collection" piece that was graded 58 at NGC I think. Luster, wear levels, marks, originality. I don't know why they were so strict 30 years ago. Prices were a lot lower then too.
Looks like the same coin to me. I guess that's why they say grading is subjective. Send it to the same TPG service, have it looked at by the same graders, one of whom is having a bad hair day, and it could come back a 55 next time.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
I would not call it a 58. A few years back I had a gold coin, in OGH, go from 30 to 40. It was way under graded in the old holder.
One can argue whether it is 55 or 58 but what did they think grading it AU 50?
Looks closer to a 55 then a 50 but of couse with gradeflation 58 is not a surprise.
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.
Crapolla!
I wish I had a 3 bagger.
