What's up with this MS Shield nickel date? (1879)

Thoughts on this date? It's an 1879 MS... looks like 1879/8 overdate? I didn't think they existed in MS?

I didn't as well but it looks like it's there you may need to have it looked at. Very cool good catch.
Hoard the keys.
The texture of the coin looks strange .Can you post a clear photo?
It sold. I missed five coins with varieties not on labels because of an emergency. Put in good bids and got outbid by one bid on all of them. Oh well I think my shield nickel days are over and I’m going back to old gold
Here was the coin:

Something is going on under the 8 also.
Successful Trades: Swampboy,
I thought the 9/8 was only in proof?
Old gold is more fun, anyway.
Definitely repunching going on. If genuine, it's either an overdate (though not the 9/8 seen on the proof), or the 9 is repunched WAY to the south. I'd be surprised if this wasn't known, as they only made 25000 of them and there would've been very few dies involved. Having said that, there isn't another example like this in CoinFacts.
This could be like the 1855 3c silver pieces. They had a really low mintage (100k, IIRC), and a good number of them have a strongly repunched date that really doesn't add a premium because so many have it.
Neat !!!
It certainly does look like a re-punched date...Too bad you did not get it.... Cheers, RickO
I don't see any photos. Although a 79/8 in MS hasn't been reported, it is quite possible they are out there. The mint had a habit of reusing proof dies for MS.
