I sometimes wonder when I put in a relatively high snipe bid through a site what would happen if someone set a crazy high bid, I guess if there is someone in the same boat thinking that no one else would bid that high, someone gets a surprise!

I rather think that the consignor thougt he had a fish on the line........and bought his own coin. Just pushin his luck.

    OINK

Ridiculous statement, I have never seen a bidder shill his auction to approximately $1,500 above retail.

there might be a return on this coin, if the buyer does any research on it

I hope they refuse that return. It's not fair to the consigners and the underbidders to let a guy walk after he has pushed up a bid like this.

If you let people walk with the excuse, "I bid too much," the auction industry will be a big trouble.

There is no way this coin will be returned; the auction is settling, as do 99.99% of our auctions - I suspect the highest of all auction houses, certain much higher than the nightmares I hear about from eBay sellers. The consignor is pleased.

With any sale, people can find negatives and people can find positives.

I have consigned several smallish lots (<$10k total) to Great Collections and been very happy with the results.

I too suspect the winner was somebody with substantial resources and in take-no-prisoners pursuit of the rattler & gold bean combination for this coin. The CAC pop shows 14 gold beans on 65s, and two on 66s. It may well be that this coin is the only one in a rattler, who knows? The winner may have been able to locate images of any number of the other gold-beaned 1913 Type Is and knows, or thinks, that this is the only one out there in a rattler. Given the final cost, I can't believe this was an instance of the winner being afflicted with "temporary auction insanity".

Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you sumthin' . . . . that ain't no optical illusion, it only looks like an optical illusion.

I have one in rattler holder 65 with gold CAC. Anyone interested?

Seems like the 2nd-high bidder would likely be a candidate.
