Kudos to Raleigh Coin Club

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Raleigh Money Expo on Saturday sponsored by the Raleigh Coin Club. The show is medium size, very well organized and run by the members. They had a nice "Kid Zone" area with games, activities, and even a gold panning operation.
The club also let me have a table to display my books and JNR issues. This was a great opportunity to meet collectors and chat informally with a bunch. I also learned a lot from the conversations including to be ready for some very interesting surprises announced during the ANA. (You'll have to attend to find out more.)
Attendance seemed good, even though there were also a Jewelry show, gun show and flea market on the same County Fair site.
Thanks to club officers, members, and guests for a wonderful reception!

I went on sat am, was fun to see most of the folks I know.
got some business done, both buying a little (although not that much) and sold a bit. Chatted with fellow dealers and collectors. I didn't see anything for me for my personal collection, although I did enjoy going as I mentioned.
Left the show about 12:00. Phone calls coming in from back home constantly wanting to know am I buying today. This was the main reason I wanted to go during dealer set up Thursday evening, but I had so much stuff come in Thursday in the last 2 hours, didn't have time to make the hour drive after I closed up.

I think the folks that run the show for Raleigh coin club are top knotch.
I think the time has arrived for local coin shows to join forces with other hobbies/interests.
We have a very busy show here in Toronto that groups stamp dealers with coin dealers.
One advantage for the coin dealers is it's about the only time in the year that they feel young again as the average age of the stamp dealers is roughly 80.
I have mentioned this before but it was at one of these shows that as I approached a stamp dealer, he said "what are you looking for today, sonny?" (and I'm 59!!!)
"“Those who sacrifice liberty for security/safety deserve neither.“(Benjamin Franklin)
"I only golf on days that end in 'Y'" (DE59)
That sounds like a great club meeting. No coin clubs in this area...... I know there are some collectors, I see one or two tables with coins at the once a year flea market...but in conversation with the people, they also bemoan the lack of shops/clubs/shows/collectors. Cheers, RickO
jdimmick - Sorry I missed you. My little table was in the back near the speakers' area.
Sorry I missed you Roger (and Jim Dimmick).
I went early on Friday - attendance was decent and I was able to pick up a couple of nice bust halves for my new set. Parking was a breeze because the other shows didn't start until Saturday.
I only wish I was a little closer to Raleigh - I'd join that club in a heartbeat.

There is an excellent knowledge base among the members I've met, and all seem willing to help one another and new collectors.
