actually, it's pretty close. $100 in 1964 had the same spending power as $808 today. So, if you figure the 64 Kennedy proof at around 14x face, it has less than double the value it had in 1964 (inflation adjusted).

Now, if you compare that to actually buying a 10 year treasury note with the 50 cents it would currently be worth 26x face. (not inflation adjusted)
If you had put the 50 cents in an S&P 500 fund - dividends reinvested - it would be worth 160x face. (not inflation adjusted)

    So, you lost money...

So if I bought $100 worth of silver Kennedy's back in the day at face for $100.00 and saved them till now and sold them today @ 14x face $1400 it's about the same :/ and given his is a proof so he would of paid a bit more maybe.
I know what you are saying but if you save a half dollar of todays money Clad Business strike P/D it will be that same .50 twenty years from now so that is not good money saved.

I seem to recall that 1964 proof sets were rather expensive right after issue due to the new Kennedy 50c.

Is it the lighting or is the coin golden toned ?
    If it's toned, it's pretty.

They were expensive for a little while. Then the Mint cranked up the proof presses again and drove prices right back down.

Judging from the picture, your coin is worth more as melt silver than numismatic value. It is a nice coin, but would be best in an album....just not worth the cost of slabbing/shipping. Cheers, RickO
