This thing is just cool.

Way cool!
Yes, a must own for any CC collector. Have had many. That's the silver variety. There are coppers too (which you know and could post for us, Todd!!).

Cool!
I don't have any coppers any more!!
Who made them?
This is hopefully responsive:
"The CC Mint did strike some medals with the cancelled dies on CC coin press 1. Specifically, they had 170 of the following struck by Don Schmitz, owner of the Nevada City Mint. The following was sold last month on the bay:"

That is sweet!!
Those aren't dies. Rather they are silver rounds struck from cancelled CC dies. Todd was kind enough to sell me several including two copper versions. One was a uniface strike on an oversized octagonal copper planchet. Todd had some great pics and perhaps he could share them.

I was the underbidder of a canceled morgan dollar obverse die a couple years ago - it went went cheap and I should have tried bidding a bit more.... Those are super cool strikes!
Interesting strikes... and nice to have, but I would not spend much money on one... Now, an actual cancelled die, that would be a neat item. Cheers, RickO
Very cool indeed

@PerryHall, I thought they were cancelled dies. I appreciate the correction and the explanation.
Edited to add: I should have known that and would have if I looked closer at the strikes as the dies would have been a mirror image.

Where are the dies now? Can DCarr borrow them?
Cool! At first, I wasn't sure what I was looking at!
Here's a uniface copper from the same obverse die:

Not even if the silver round was struck with original (cancelled) Carson City Mint dies, on Carson City Mint press #1, inside the original Carson City Mint building ?
There are worse things to play with Todd ( and better

@dcarr.... Well...that would be tempting.....

.
a simple obsevation. small cc on 84 reverse.
how did this come about?
.
The reverse is a 78-CC cancelled die.
There were some dies found buried under the parking lot a few years back and some half dollars were struck also, here's one I have...They were rusty and cancelled, but re-struck at the Carson City Mint and sold or were door prizes at a coin show at the facility..
Bought this from you Todd a few years ago.

Interesting link about CC restrikes...

In the mid 1970s I purchased this one sided "coin" at the Carson City Mint Museum Store. I had it mounted on a sterling money clip. I heard the man who ran the Nevada City Mint had (25?) two ounce coins with both the front and reverse made up. But I am not sure this is true.
These are as cool as anything in the ANA Money Museum!!! Sweet, thanks for this!

Welcome to the forum.
The one I posted about to start this thread is one of the 2 ounce pieces.
Interesting Thread !
What a refreshing thread. Thanks. Very informative

My two uniface copper strikes. Sadly, I passed on the silver strikes.
I find modern Cancel die strikes quite desirable. I am wandering ever deeper in the World of EXONUMIA. I just dig this coin art.
Then you will like this one 1878-S and 1878-CC cancelled dies struck on a Maria Theresa Thaler restrike. Flip I have it is in noted, not the same dies that are in the CC mint museum.
Questions on the 2oz silver Don Schmitz medals struck with cancelled CC dies:
1) Sources vary on the location where they were struck. Some say the Nevada City Mint. Others say the old Carson City Mint, on coin press #1.
2) Sources say that they were struck in the late 1990s, but no specific year is provided.
3) I have not read whether the VAM has been investigated for the 1884 obverse or the 1878 reverse. Although there was die rust/damage, it looks to me like possibly 1884-CC VAM 4 obverse, and possibly 1878-CC VAM 7 reverse.
Can you help in providing an answer or reliable source for any of these questions?

Beautiful specimen!
It looks like this just sold on eBay. Anyone know the price? There’s a price listed but I’m not sure of a best offer was accepted or not.
