Help For A Friend

KudbegudKudbegud Posts: 4,735 ✭✭✭✭✭

A friend found this nickel and wanted to know what it is. These are his photos from his phone.

Side by side with a normal one. The rim looks taller than usual.

Side by side edge view.. Sure is thicker.

Closer, better view of the edge. There is a definite seam.

Looks like a coin got stuck in the collar and another coin got struck on top of it cold welding them together

Any help identifying the story would be appreciated..

Tell him to weigh the thick coin to see if it is the correct weight. If so, it is not two coins and probably struck partially out of the collar.

Looks to be beaten around the edge. Further beating would make the thing ready as a ring.

From the top it does - my thought also at first. Then I saw the edge. :)

That seam or ridge in the side suggests 2 coins or partially outside the collar. He is looking for a more accurate scale. 10 grams would seal it as two coins, I think. 5 grams goes to the partial collar.

Stack the two and see if the diameter is smaller

Pics of the reverse would have helped. The rim next to "Liberty" looks like it is rolled over the text.

Is the coin the slightest bit smaller in diameter than a regular coin?

In any case, weight will help confirm.

Dip it in some acetone see if it comes apart It look put together.

Pls clarify for me...if a partial collar, wouldn't the part outside of the collar expand beyond the part in the collar?

I see grooves on the edge but the entire edge seems to be the same diameter.

Looks like a smuggler's coin. Check inside.... Or ? That's my view & SWAG.

That definitely looks like an out of collar strike.... not hammered for a ring... the 'seams' preclude that option.
If weight is correct, that would clinch it. Cheers, RickO

People need to help me visualize this. I assumed that if it was struck outside the collar it would expand outward, not upward....

Also, you are missing some important advice as you did not include the word "error" in the title. You need to attract people like @FredWeinberg and @ErrorsOnCoins to get additional input.

    It's damaged, in my opinion.

Look at the 'raised' rim on the obv.

That damage caused the 'partial collar' look,
but it's not a partial collar error imo.

Actually, I meant to say that whatever
caused the two-tier edge caused the
    raised rim......all PMD

Yes, it would appear most certainly (PMD) to be outside the mint; unless messed with "inside"and snuck out. But we all know this doesn't happen.

Thank you for all your helpful posts. I hope he gets it weighed this weekend. I'll post any new info that I get.

  • KudbegudKudbegud Posts: 4,735 ✭✭✭✭✭

He reported that it weighs the same a regular nickel. He thought FredWeinberg was correct that it was post mint damage. The mystery seems to be solved.

    Thanks for all your help.
