1944 D Quarter RPM?

Spotted this one without my loupe and was surprised to see what looks like D/D/D under magnification. Let me know what you think.

My opinion is machine or strike doubling. The second and third D's appear to have a flat or shelf-like surface shape. I see no separations between the D's. However, I'm baffled as to how this doubling occurs just on the mint mark and nowhere else I can see. The mystery at the mint! Maybe we have a new Discovery Channel Show in the works?
That is exactly as I was thinking. That is why I made sure to have the letters in the close up images I included.
I'm pretty sure this is a legit D/D/D - not strike doubling (or tripling, as it were). Great photos!

How about a "strike doubled" D/D...LOL
So what are the next steps of having this varified? As I don't know of any 44 D RPM's.
Send it to Coin World for free. Otherwise, our host. Good luck. I was just joking about the RPM in my post above.
It looks a lot like machine doubling but I am not sure how it occurs just on the mint mark like that. Interesting find for sure
It certainly appears to be a tripled D..... You should send it to Coin World as @Insider2 recommended...Perhaps @FredWeinberg will comment on this issue...Cheers, RickO
I'm in the MD camp- the doubling is flat and shelf-like. MD on Washington quarter mintmarks is extremely common.
I agree MD is common on these, however you would see some doubling elsewhere. wingtips, letter tips, arrows. But nothing like the tripling of a MM.
As stated above, I will be sending this off for further verification.
Many quarters, especially from the 1950's and early 60's and especially Denver coins, show MD only on the mintmark- not sure how it happens, but it does. I do hope yours turns out to be an RPM.
It is a long shot, but I hope so too.
This is true.
The OP's coin is machine doubled.
