My first "greattoning" coin

Nice one from Japan. image

Type 1 50 sen

The auction ended when I was fast asleep so I woke up anxious to see if I'd won it. I can't remember when was the last time I felt such a coin-related rush. Now, if only I could find a nice type 1 yen to match it...

PS: Thanks to the member who gladly offered his expert advice.

Congrats on a nice-looking coin, Dimitri!

For some unknown reason, I seem to get the eery feeling that AT lurks behind many of this guy's slabs. I wonder if this one is real.

You know its interesting that you should say that. I make a business of trying to locate the most beautiful and funky looking coins available but I try my best to make sure that most are in "the big three" holders. Even then if I suspect a coin is questionable I will say I don't make um I just sell um. My point is if PCGS or NGC call these coins "real" who am I to argue. I can assure you I am not a coin doctor!

I tried to get a couple of his coins last night, but I struck out big time. I guess I just didn't want them badly enough!

Thanks for the info, and your constant vigilance, MrD!

For the record, I think a lot of your coins are unquestionably real toning, such as the Maundy set I'm bidding on at the moment.

    I agree.

Sometimes it's just so hard to tell from the photos.

    Thank you for the comments.

That was an unexpected entry MrD ! Many members are watching and/or bidding on your auctions including myself. This was my third real try to win one, after loosing a nice electric red 38D buffalo and a 1901 GB florin. We'd sure like to see you around more often. Oh yes, in case I'm your first customer from Greece, there's no global priority available.image

One other thing MRD. Many of us around here take digital photos of coins and were wondering if you have any pointers or would care to share what you use for your setup.

That is a very nice one!! I had that on my watch list, which I forgot to watch while travelling. For what it's worth, I very much like the Maundy set I got from MrD/Greattoning a litlle while back. And I paid more than I had planned image Any more Japanese coins MrD?
