<< <i>there's got to be more than one variety of 1864-S halves, wonder which one you got? >>
Looks like the large S, WB-101.

As far as the comments on hoping you got a break on the price because the coin is raw - that seems to go against the "Don't be afraid to step up and pay for quality" or "There are no bargains in numismatics" slogans that are tossed around here ad nauseum .. Just because PCGS or NGC or any other TPG has not opined on the grade of the coin doesn't make it any less desirable or valuable for those who know what they have and for those who know what they are buying .. Series specialists tend to be far more consistent with the grading within their series than TPG; especially on mid grade circulated coins.
Sounds like a double-standard to me ..
But not to take away from the post's purpose of a wonderful find - Nice score

PCGS XF45...
Was hoping it might squeak out au50 or even XF45+ but happy nonetheless!!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
With the seller marking the 2X2 at $375 XF+ I don't think they were asleep at the wheel. That's plenty of money for a slightly better date seated half. Now if a seller marked the coin VF30 and priced it at $80, that would have been asleep at the wheel.
<< <i>Nice grade.

HAH! I respect ya rr, but ya don't know half the story. And Andrew ain't spillin' it either. Pick a number somewhere between the high and low numbers noted above - and trust me - its closer to the lower. . .

Now that's she's in captivity, I'll chock this up to conservation and preservation of a dwindling resource.

If only I could have gotten to that little show sooner.
Congratulations.

10-4. Maybe I should have said nice negotiation. Or was the coin put in that 2x2 by the Vbowling299?
Some dealers do sleep at the wheel. Some still can't grade. My last visit to a local shop got me a crusty, raw 1872-s in VF for $65. That was around CDN price as I recall. 1. CDN prices are absurd on this date. 2. The coin was an XF....now a PCGS XF-40. So even after 30-40 years in the trade, some dealers can't grade. Or, they've gotten old enough that they can no longer grade. That 72-s was bought only a couple of years ago and it was the cheapest I've ever bought one in 40 years of looking for them. My first 72-s was a VG for $19 from Bowers and Ruddy back in the 1970's. I still have the receipt for that one. And it was over-priced too. I was the one asleep at the wheel....lol. I constantly find that when I thought a got a seated coin deal I could never top....invariably another comes along to top it. Keep looking and they'll keep coming. I've also sold nice seated coins to dealers who doubled and tripled up on me immediately due to upgrades....it happens. Just don't let it happen too often.

Nice score. Maybe it could go AU , with a little help. Not that I'm proponent of things , but restoration could bring home the bacon.

Even I knew dipping such a coin out could result in a higher grade, and potentially more money, I would not do it. I prefer that Ricko not enter the seated coin arena.
